Gagaku is Japan’s court music and dance tradition: a living art that brings together Japanese song and forms of instrumental music and dance that arrived through cultural exchange with the Asian continent and were adapted in Japan. Its performances range from instrumental ensembles to dance and song, so “gagaku” does not describe just one sound or format.
What is gagaku?
Gagaku is a tradition of court music and dance shaped by several strands. UNESCO describes ancient Japanese songs, instrumental music and ceremonial dance developed on the Asian continent and adapted by Japanese artists, and vocal music drawing on Japanese folk songs and Chinese poems. UNESCO characterizes it as “the oldest of the Japanese traditional performing arts”; that is UNESCO’s description, rather than a comparative finding about every tradition worldwide. This history is one of exchange and adaptation, not a single unchanged import. Gagaku is also not merely a relic: performers continue to maintain and present it today.
What does gagaku sound like?
UNESCO describes its songs as long and slow, with dance-like movement. The ensemble brings together wind, string and percussion instruments. As a listening guide, notice the contrast between sustained wind tones, ornamented melodic lines and the measured texture of the group; these are ways to describe the experience, not technical measurements of the sound.

What are the main forms of gagaku?
The Imperial Household Agency distinguishes three performance categories. UNESCO also describes two particular strands of song and performance, which help explain the tradition’s range.

The National Theatre educational resource uses the related term “Utai-mono” alongside Kangen and Bugaku. Terminology varies by source, so it is more accurate to retain each source’s labels than to treat every performance category as interchangeable. National Theatre: Gagaku learning resource

Which instruments are used in gagaku?
The Imperial Household Agency lists instruments across wind, string and percussion groups:
- Winds: shō (mouth organ), hichiriki (oboe) and fue (flute).
- Strings: sō (Japanese harp or koto) and biwa (lute).
- Percussion: kakko and taiko drums, shōko (bronze gong) and san-no-tsuzumi (hour-glass drum).
The names and broad groupings identify the ensemble’s components; they do not by themselves explain how each instrument is built or played. The Imperial Household Agency’s Gagaku page provides its instrument list.

How old is gagaku?
Gagaku’s history spans more than a thousand years, but the institutional timeline includes periods of decline and revival rather than an unbroken story of stable administration. The Japan Arts Council’s National Theatre timeline identifies these milestones:
- 701: The official Bureau of Music, or Gagaku-ryō, was established according to the Taihō Code.
- 1870: The forerunner of today’s Imperial Household Agency Music Department was established.

How is gagaku preserved and performed today?
The Imperial Household Agency Music Department continues to perform and care for the tradition. Its performers appear at court functions, state dinners and garden parties, as well as in public recitals and performances around Japan, including at the National Theatre. A listing of these settings does not guarantee that a particular event is open to the public or currently scheduled; check the Agency’s current information before planning a visit. Gagaku performed by the Agency’s Music Department was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property in Japan in 1955. UNESCO inscribed Gagaku on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. UNESCO describes masters in the Agency’s Music Department transmitting the tradition to apprentices, with many musicians coming from families with deep roots in the art. That is one important channel of transmission, not the only community or organization involved in performing gagaku. Listen to a recording
A library catalog records Gagaku: Court Music of Japan, performed by Tokyo Gakuso under the direction of Tadamaro Ohno. The JVC compact disc was issued in 2000 as VICG-60393; the catalog lists a 56-minute recording featuring works including Manzairaku, Ranryo ou and Nasori. Use a beginner’s book and CD
Taiko Center describes Hajimete no Gagaku as a Japanese-language, 154-page beginner’s book with CD. Its listed subjects include the shō, hichiriki and ryūteki, along with playing methods, instrument history and scores.
