Lucasfilm’s series page describes the live-action story as set about 100 years before The Phantom Menace, in the final years of the High Republic. It follows an investigation into crimes against Jedi and the connection between former Padawan Osha Aniseya and Jedi Master Sol. Amandla Stenberg played Osha and her twin Mae, Lee Jung-jae played Sol, and Manny Jacinto played the Stranger. Lucasfilm lists Disney+ as the series’ streaming destination. Lucasfilm: The Acolyte.
What Lee Jung-jae said about the cancellation
Jung-jae told Variety, in comments reported by TV Insider on August 24, 2024, that he was “quite surprised” the series would not continue. He praised Headland’s writing and said he had looked forward to seeing what she would do with a second season. Although Sol dies in season one, Jung-jae expressed hope that the story might still continue: “Honestly, I am hoping that maybe there could be changes in the future.” TV Insider’s report on Jung-jae’s comments.

How Leslye Headland later viewed the decision
In an interview with The Wrap, reported by GamesRadar in November 2025, creator and showrunner Headland distinguished between expecting the non-renewal and being taken aback by its timing and public handling. “I was not surprised by it. I think I was surprised at the swiftness of it and the publicness of it. I was surprised by how it was handled,” she said.
Headland explained that calls about the reaction, criticism, and viewership had led her to expect the decision: “But once I was getting particular phone calls about the reaction and the criticism and the viewership, I felt like ‘OK, the writing’s on the wall for sure.’” She also said the series appeared in Nielsen rankings a couple of times. Those are Headland’s reflections, not a statement of Disney or Lucasfilm’s official reasoning. GamesRadar’s report on Headland’s interview.

Why was The Acolyte cancelled?
The available reporting does not establish a definitive official explanation from Disney or Lucasfilm. Headland’s account connects her expectations to conversations about reception, criticism, and viewership, but it does not confirm the company’s decision-making criteria. The published figures and comments below offer context; they do not prove a cause.
Disney’s premiere figures
Disney announced that The Acolyte generated 4.8 million views in one day and 11.1 million global views over five days, calling it Disney+’s biggest series premiere of 2024 at that point. Disney defines a “view” as total stream time divided by runtime, so these figures are not counts of unique people. They cover the premiere window, not the entire season, and do not reveal retention, profitability, production costs, or the renewal threshold. The Walt Disney Company’s premiere announcement.

Different measures describe different things
ABC News reported on August 20, 2024, that Rotten Tomatoes showed a 78% critics score and an 18% audience score. Those percentages are a dated snapshot, not current scores, and they are review-aggregator measures rather than viewing figures. Disney’s premiere views use a viewing-time calculation, while Headland’s Nielsen comments refer to rankings. None of these measures, alone or together, supplies an official explanation for the non-renewal.

There is no confirmed season two: the series was not renewed, and the available reporting does not establish a revival. Jung-jae voiced hope that the story could continue, but his comment was an expression of hope, not an announcement of plans.
