The documented story is more specific about how she and Glen Ballard wrote the song—and how Morissette turned jealousy and heartbreak into an unusually candid public confession.
What “You Oughta Know” was about
In a 1998 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Morissette described admitting in the song that she felt “jealous and horrified and shattered” after someone left her. She called it a public admission. That testimony supports reading the song as an expression of breakup pain and insecurity; it does not establish that every lyric is a literal account of events.
The distinction matters: an emotionally autobiographical song can draw on real feelings without documenting a fully verifiable story about one named person.
Who wrote the song—and how
Morissette has named Glen Ballard as her co-writer. In a 2020 Vogue interview, she said her writing sessions usually took 10 to 20 minutes, with music and lyrics developing at the same time. Recalling a moment when she wondered whether to replace an explicit word in “You Oughta Know,” she said Ballard asked, “Is that what you felt?” They kept it.

In her 2015 first-person essay, Morissette described their broader division of labor: they wrote music together, she wrote lyrics, and Ballard produced. She also said “You Oughta Know” and “Perfect” were written before the pair visited record companies. That account places the song within an established collaboration rather than treating it as a lyric written in isolation.
Was it about Dave Coulier?
The sources cited here do not confirm that Dave Coulier—or any other named person—was the song’s subject. Morissette’s own accounts establish the collaboration and the emotional context, but they do not identify a specific ex. A popular identification should therefore be treated as unconfirmed, not as a fact established by the artist’s testimony.
When accounts conflict, weigh them by what they actually establish: Morissette’s direct statements are evidence of her described feelings and writing process; a third party’s claim or a repeated rumor is not equivalent to her naming a subject.

“You Oughta Know” appeared on Jagged Little Pill, Morissette’s 1995 album. CBS describes it as one of the record’s explosive anthems. Its explicit language and sexual imagery helped make the song’s anger and candor conspicuous, but the lasting point is not a confirmed celebrity target: it is the force of presenting heartbreak without softening it.
The Independent reported in 2020 that the song reached No. 6 on a U.S. Billboard chart. The cited passage does not specify which Billboard chart or the date of that peak, so those details cannot be stated more precisely here.
