The Acolyte’s Dark Side Fighting Style: Martial-Arts Influences and Legends Connections

The Acolyte blends martial-arts and samurai-film influences with Star Wars Legends lore, but its creators have not tied the Stranger’s fighting style to a named Legends form.

The Acolyte’s fights draw on wushu, kung fu and samurai cinema, while the series also incorporates ideas from Star Wars’ former Expanded Universe, now known as Legends. Those are related parts of the show’s creative identity, but creator Leslye Headland and the stunt team have not said that the Stranger’s moves come from a particular Legends lightsaber form.

What martial arts influenced The Acolyte’s fights?

Creator and showrunner Leslye Headland described The Acolyte as a love letter to martial-arts sagas and samurai films, naming Come Drink with Me and Yojimbo as influences. She said the fighting style was crafted after wushu. Action director Christopher Clark Cowan added that Headland wanted wushu, kung fu and samurai flair in the action. StarWars.com’s interview with Headland and its interview with the stunt team describe these as creative influences, not a claim that characters practice a specific real-world martial art.

The production team used those influences as a starting point, then shaped movement around character and story. That distinction matters: the fights are designed performances, not demonstrations of a single discipline.

What makes the Stranger’s fighting style look different?

Manny Jacinto, who plays the Stranger, said the aim was to move away from the upright fencing structure he associated with earlier Star Wars fights. “We wanted the Stranger to move very differently from what you’ve seen in the prequels and in the original trilogy,” he told StarWars.com. He described the intended movement as “quick, yet powerful, but also sneaky.”

In Jacinto’s account, the role called for strength, flexibility and dynamism. The result is meant to combine speed with controlled power and stealth, rather than simply reproduce the more upright posture he associated with the earlier films. These are the actor’s descriptions of the choreography’s goals, not an official classification of a lightsaber form.

How do Mae’s fights express her character?

The stunt team also differentiated Mae’s movement from Osha’s. Cowan described Mae’s approach as direct and erratic; assistant fight coordinator and stunt choreographer Lu Junchang likened her movement to a tiger. The opening noodle-shop fight was also intended to pay homage to Kill Bill. These descriptions explain the team’s characterization choices; they do not identify Mae’s style as a named martial art.

Amandla Stenberg described preparing for the physical demands of the role with the stunt team beginning six weeks before production. Her training included fundamentals such as hip placement, punches and kicks, combinations, boxing and knife practice, as she recounted in StarWars.com’s finale interview. That account illustrates the performers’ preparation, rather than establishing the fictional origin of Mae’s technique.

What is the connection to the old Expanded Universe?

Headland has said she grew up immersed in Expanded Universe books, including Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire, and that she brought EU lore into The Acolyte. In her StarWars.com interview, she gave examples including Jecki Lon’s half-Theelin, half-human heritage and a Zygerrian Jedi, and teased that she used “a couple of really big EU ideas.” The show’s Legends connection is therefore real at the level of broader story and worldbuilding.

That does not establish a Legends origin for the Stranger’s combat technique. The interviews identify martial-arts and samurai influences for the action, and broader EU influences for the series, but do not tie Qimir’s choreography to a named Legends sword form. The careful distinction is between how the fights were creatively shaped and which older Star Wars lore informed the story.

Why emphasize individual fights in this era?

The Acolyte takes place roughly 100 years before The Phantom Menace. Headland described a period when the Jedi are at the height of their power and do not expect to encounter the dark side. She favored intimate conflicts and one-on-one battles, using combat to reveal character in a setting without a galaxy-spanning war. That focus gives choreography room to communicate differences in temperament and tactics, rather than serving only as battlefield spectacle.

How does the finale’s red lightsaber relate to the fighting style?

The finale’s visual shift is a separate piece of dark-side storytelling, not evidence of a particular combat tradition. ILM production visual-effects supervisor Julian Foddy said the exposed kyber crystal responds to the anger flowing through Osha, and that the team designed the red change as a visual storytelling effect. StarWars.com’s interview with Foddy explains the scene’s visual intent; it does not connect the color change to the Stranger’s choreography.
