For surreal animation, sharp parody, or gentler character comedy, these nine Adult Swim series offer very different ways into the network’s catalogue. They are recommendations from a list published on August 14, 2024—not a guarantee that every show or season is currently available on Max. Catalogues vary by country and change over time, so check the listing in your own Max market before settling on a watch.
Choose by the kind of comedy you want
This is a selection, not a best-to-worst ranking. The quickest way to choose is by format and comic style: the list ranges from surreal sitcoms and sketch comedy to science-fiction, social satire, and quiet character comedy. If you are unsure about Adult Swim’s more abrasive or deliberately odd humor, start with a premise that matches your own tolerance for it.

| Show | Format and comic mode | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Aqua Teen Hunger Force | Surreal sitcom | A milkshake, fries, and a ball of meat share a home in South New Jersey and get pulled into absurd adventures. Its intentionally strange humor makes it a useful first test of whether Adult Swim’s offbeat style works for you. |
| Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law | Parody | Former superhero Birdman becomes a lawyer, defending familiar Hanna-Barbera characters in court. |
| Joe Pera Talks With You | Gentle, character-led comedy | A fictionalized Joe Pera, a choir teacher in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, encounters an eccentric local community. |
| Rick and Morty | Science-fiction comedy | A mad scientist and his grandson travel through alternate realities. It is the pick for viewers drawn to sci-fi premises as well as comedy. |
| Home Movies | Animated character comedy | An eight-year-old aspiring filmmaker forms an unusual friendship with his coach. Creator Loren Bouchard later made Bob’s Burgers. |
| Sealab 2021 | Surreal animated comedy | The series builds comedy from footage of the earlier Hanna-Barbera show Sealab 2020. Creators Adam Reed and Matt Thompson later made Archer. |
| Smiling Friends | Animated sitcom | Two employees of a charitable company try to bring happiness to the people they meet. |
| The Boondocks | Satirical sitcom | An anime-influenced series about a Black family living in a predominantly White suburb, with social commentary at its center. |
| Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! | Surreal sketch comedy | A sketch series known for celebrity cameos and an influence on later comedy. |
How to pick your first show
- Want a recognizable genre turned sideways? Try Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law for legal parody or Rick and Morty for science-fiction comedy.
- Prefer sketches to a continuing sitcom premise? Start with Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!
- Looking for a gentler pace? Joe Pera Talks With You is the character-led option in this group.
- Interested in satire? The Boondocks is the pick with social commentary built into its premise.
- Want comedy that leans hard into the bizarre? Consider Aqua Teen Hunger Force or Sealab 2021.
- Want an unusual friendship or an offbeat mission? Choose Home Movies for the aspiring filmmaker and his coach, or Smiling Friends for its happiness-bringing duo.
Check Max availability in your country
Adult Swim’s official Where to Watch page lists HBO Max in many territories and other distributors in some markets. That does not establish that all nine shows—or every season of any one show—are on Max where you live. Search for each title in your local service and check the seasons before planning a watch.
For a show-specific example, Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty season hub advertises Max viewing for season 8 and also points to digital and disc ownership. This applies to Rick and Morty; it should not be taken as evidence about the other titles.
