The Acolyte ended after its first season, and Disney did not renew it for a second. Disney Entertainment co-chair Alan Bergman later said the series’ performance was not strong enough, given its cost structure, to justify making another season. Creator Leslye Headland separately described hearing concerns about both viewership and criticism. The public record points to performance weighed against cost—not a confirmed single ratings number or one cause.
Was The Acolyte cancelled?
Yes. The eight-episode series was not renewed after its first season, which ran from June 4 through July 16, 2024, according to ABC News. That means there is no second season announced in the reporting cited here.

Lucasfilm describes the show as a live-action story set in the final years of the High Republic, about 100 years before The Phantom Menace. Created and showrun by Leslye Headland, it follows former Padawan and mechanic Osha as she reunites with Jedi Master Sol to investigate a series of crimes. Lucasfilm’s series page gives the premise and original Disney+ debut date.
Why did Disney decide not to make season 2?
The clearest public explanation came from Disney Entertainment co-chair Alan Bergman. In a December 19, 2024 report, TVLine quoted him saying Disney was happy with the show’s performance, but it was not where the company needed it to be “given the cost structure” to make a second season. In other words, Disney’s stated rationale was the relationship between performance and cost.
#1 Best Overall
Disney has not publicly disclosed a precise renewal threshold or, in the cited sources, a season-two budget. The executive’s comment therefore explains the decision in broad terms; it does not establish a specific audience figure that the show needed to reach or prove that any single measure determined the outcome.
What did creator Leslye Headland say?
Headland later described hearing about both viewership and criticism before the cancellation. In a November 22, 2025 account, CinemaBlend reported her response to a question about whether viewership or creative factors were chiefly responsible: “It was kind of both.” She said she was surprised by how quickly and publicly the decision was handled, but that calls about reaction, criticism and viewership had made the outcome seem clear to her.
Rank #2
Headland also said she understood Star Wars series to be judged against other Star Wars shows, not only against contemporaneous titles elsewhere in the streaming market. She noted that The Acolyte appeared in Nielsen rankings a couple of times, but not every week. Those are her retrospective observations, not a published Disney renewal formula.
How many people watched The Acolyte?
Disney announced that the premiere episode drew 4.8 million views in its first day and 11.1 million global views over five days, calling it Disney+’s biggest series premiere of 2024 at that point. In its June 10, 2024 announcement, The Walt Disney Company defined a view as total stream time divided by runtime.
These figures are views under Disney’s stream-time calculation, not counts of unique people. They describe the premiere’s early performance; by themselves, they do not show how many viewers completed the season or how Disney assessed the series against the cost of producing another one.

The available statements do not establish that reviews or audience scores independently caused Disney’s decision. Headland said she heard concerns about criticism and viewership, while Bergman gave a performance-versus-cost explanation. Those accounts offer context, but neither provides a quantitative renewal rule.
Rank #4
ABC News reported, on August 20, 2024, Rotten Tomatoes scores of 78% from critics and 18% from audiences. Those are a dated snapshot, not current scores, and they do not demonstrate that either score drove the non-renewal.
