How this 2025 movie list is scoped
There is no single, definitive set of exactly 50 “new movies”: North American schedules include wide and limited releases alongside special engagements and re-releases. This shortlist uses a narrower editorial definition—films with a North American theatrical debut scheduled or reported for 2025—and excludes re-releases and special engagements. It is selective, not a ranking or an exhaustive release calendar.
The Associated Press described the summer 2025 slate as having “over 40 wide releases spanning genres,” a count specific to summer, not the whole year. Its summer guide included superhero, family, racing, romance, horror and independent films. The release schedule maintained by The Numbers separates release types and is North American; dates and availability can differ elsewhere. The AP’s summer guide used the phrase “what’s coming to theaters and streaming,” but it is a seasonal guide, not a current, complete catalog for the full year. The What to Watch theatrical guide was last updated August 11, 2025, and notes that dates can shift. Neither a planned release date nor an original theatrical opening confirms a film’s streaming service today.
