Looking for the best movies on Max right now? This U.S.-focused guide is organized by mood so you can choose a film for tonight, whether you want a sweeping fantasy, a tense crime story, or a horror pick. The availability examples below were reported for the U.S. on October 6, 2026; check Max before you press play, because its catalog changes and varies by country.
How to choose a movie on Max
Max’s catalog includes HBO films, Max Originals, and selected titles from Warner Bros., DC, Cartoon Network, Harry Potter, and other brands. For the latest availability, browse the Movies section or the “Top 10 Movies,” “Just Added,” and “Coming Soon” rows. The “Last Chance” row highlights titles leaving soon. Max notes that some movies and shows are available for a limited time. See Max’s browsing and availability guidance.
The recommendations below are grouped by viewing mood, not ranked. A date-checked U.S. streaming guide listed several of these films as available on October 6, 2026, but it draws availability data from TMDB rather than Max itself. Confirm each title in your account before watching. Check the dated U.S. guide.
For a big, immersive story
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Choose this fantasy adventure when you want a richly imagined world and the beginning of a journey that grows across a trilogy. It is a natural starting point if you have not seen the films in order.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
For a full-scale fantasy finale, this is the expansive choice: multiple battles and character arcs converge in a story built for an uninterrupted evening. It works best after the first two films.
Dune (2021)
Denis Villeneuve’s science-fiction epic introduces a desert planet, rival powers, and Paul Atreides’s uncertain future. It sets up the continuing story rather than resolving it on its own.

For classic-film discovery, Metacritic lets you filter its Max listings by genre and release year; its page includes examples such as Tokyo Story, Lawrence of Arabia, Fanny and Alexander, Singin’ in the Rain, and City Lights. Treat that page as a discovery aid, not proof a film is still on Max: browse Metacritic’s Max-filtered films.
Horror availability can change quickly, too. A U.S. October 2026 horror guide reported Evil Dead Burn streaming from October 2 and October 1 additions including the first five Nightmare on Elm Street films, Freddy vs. Jason, The Exorcist, The Shining, Trick ’r Treat, and Coraline. It also reported that Barbarian, The Substance, Night of the Living Dead (1968), and the original The Evil Dead left on September 30. These are dated guide reports, not a guarantee of what is playable now: see the October horror guide.
