How to choose a fragrance that lasts
Concentration is a useful clue, not a stopwatch. Linda Levy, president of The Fragrance Foundation, told Vogue that perfume-oil concentration is the main technical factor behind lasting intensity. Common labels include parfum, eau de parfum (EDP), eau de toilette (EDT), and eau de cologne or eau fraîche; actual formulas can vary. Levy described extrait as typically containing 20% to 40% fragrance oil.
Vogue cites roughly six to eight hours as typical wear for a long-lasting fragrance, with some reaching ten hours or more. That is Levy’s broad description, not a guarantee for a particular bottle or wearer. Skin chemistry affects both how a scent develops and how long it remains perceptible. You can also become accustomed to a fragrance and stop noticing it as readily; that does not prove it has vanished.
Longevity and projection are different: a close-to-skin scent can linger without filling a room, while a scent with strong sillage travels farther. Consider the fragrance’s character, reported wear, concentration, intended setting, and your own tolerance for intensity. If possible, sample it on your skin and wear it through a day—or, as ELLE recommends, test over a day or two—before committing to a full bottle.

Which one should you try first?

Autumne West, Nordstrom’s national beauty director, told ELLE that fragrances with greater longevity typically include EDPs, extraits, and intense colognes. Use that as a starting point, not a rule: a formula’s label cannot tell you exactly how it will smell or wear on your skin.
