There is no objective “best” list of scenes depicting desire between women. This editorial selection favors moments whose craft and meaning matter to the film: intimacy shaped by character agency, emotional consequence, or a deliberate challenge to familiar genre conventions. It distinguishes romantic intimacy and kissing from explicitly sexual material; explicitness alone is not a measure of quality.
The available film-specific evidence supports several useful candidates, but not verification of 15 particular scenes or a defensible ranking of them. Rather than invent scene details to fill a numbered list, this guide identifies the titles that can be responsibly discussed and explains what makes them relevant. “Mainstream” here means films discussed in mainstream film culture, not a claim that every title had the same audience or release reach.

What makes a scene memorable?
A compelling moment between women does more than display attraction. Its meaning comes from who has agency, what the characters understand about one another, and how the scene changes or clarifies their relationship. A quiet exchange of looks can carry more emotional weight than a more explicit encounter if the film has made that attention consequential.
Film form matters, too. Camp can use familiar romance or action conventions playfully, while other films make the gaze itself central to intimacy. These approaches are not interchangeable, and a scene should be considered in the context of the film rather than as isolated spectacle.

Films with relevant, supportable context
But I’m a Cheerleader (1999)
Katrin Horn’s scholarly chapter considers But I’m a Cheerleader in relation to lesbian camp, romance, and genre conventions. That framework makes the film a useful example of how a romantic story can engage with mainstream genre expectations. The chapter supports that broader context, but not a claim about a specific scene’s details; those should be checked against the film before describing them. Read Horn’s chapter on lesbian camp.
D.E.B.S. (2004)
Horn also analyzes D.E.B.S. as a camp engagement with lesbian romance and genre conventions. Its relevance lies in that representational context, rather than in a scene ranking established by the available evidence. Horn’s chapter discusses both films.

Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013)
The distributor describes the film as an adaptation of Julie Maroh’s graphic novel and as an intense love story. It is frequently discussed for intimate scenes, but its sexual content is explicit; that fact should be presented with context rather than treated as proof that a scene is better or more meaningful. The distributor’s description establishes the adaptation and love-story framing, not an objective ranking of its scenes. See the distributor’s film page.
The film’s source material is Julie Maroh’s graphic novel, a useful point of comparison for readers interested in the adaptation’s origins. The distributor identifies the graphic novel as its source.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
NEON describes a painter and her subject at the center of Portrait of a Lady on Fire. A Guardian essay highlights the film’s attention to women looking at one another and to sensuality, offering a useful lens on how observation can become part of an intimate relationship. This is a different kind of appeal from a scene judged chiefly by explicitness. See NEON’s official film page and read the Guardian’s discussion.
Cruel Intentions (1999)
The Guardian essay also names Cruel Intentions while discussing how mainstream cinema frames lesbian intimacy and the gaze. That makes it relevant to a conversation about representation, but the cited discussion does not establish a specific scene ranking or settle how the film should be categorized against every meaning of “mainstream.” See the Guardian essay.

The Handmaiden (2016)
The Handmaiden appears in Marie Claire’s discussion of romantic and sexual scenes. Its inclusion makes it a candidate for readers exploring the topic, not a verified placement in a ranked list of 15. See Marie Claire’s film list.

For more films centered on romance between women, Gay Times’ roundup is a discovery resource that includes Love Lies Bleeding and other titles. A roundup can help identify candidates, but it does not by itself verify a particular scene or establish that each film fits every reader’s definition of mainstream cinema. When choosing a scene, consider whether it is romantic intimacy, a kiss, or explicitly sexual; whether both characters have agency; and what the moment contributes to the story. Those distinctions help avoid treating different kinds of representation as though they were the same.
