They come from current editorial guides rather than one independently tested, comparable ranking, so use the list to find a formula that fits your finish preference, skin feel, shade match and budget.
How to choose foundation for oily skin
Oil control and a matte finish are not the same thing. Oily skin can look polished in a natural or radiant base, while an ultra-matte formula may feel too dry or look flat. Allure’s Los Angeles-based makeup artist Alexandra McCormick recommends “a long-wearing liquid foundation with a natural or soft-matte finish,” as a way to control shine without a heavy-looking layer. She also cautions that “Extremely mattifying formulas can sometimes make the skin look flat or even encourage the skin to produce more oil throughout the day,” she says. Those are professional observations, not a guarantee about how every formula will behave on every wearer. Allure’s 2026 guide discusses the trade-off.
- Finish: Decide whether you want matte, soft matte, satin or radiant, rather than assuming oily skin requires the flattest finish.
- Coverage and texture: Buildable liquid formulas can let you add coverage only where needed. Full-coverage bases can look more made-up if applied heavily; powders are useful for very oily areas and touch-ups.
- Wear: Separate a brand’s wear-time promise from an editor’s or tester’s reported experience. Neither predicts an exact result for you.
- Shade and value: Match in your local market if possible. Shade counts, availability and prices vary by country and can change.
Makeup artist Lauren D’Amelio Ventre told Glamour: “Long-wearing foundations for oily skin aren’t simply drier foundations. They have oil-controlling ingredients and flexible technology,” she says. That distinction is useful when comparing comfort as well as shine control. Glamour’s 2026 guide says it consulted artists and assessed whether products kept skin shine-free; Woman & Home reports that its oily-skinned testers wore products for at least a full day. These are those publishers’ methods, not personal testing for this article.

For a natural or soft-matte finish
- Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation. A drugstore liquid to consider if you want a lightweight, natural-matte look and buildable medium coverage. Maybelline describes it as oil-free and intended for normal-to-oily skin; its current US product page claims up to 12 hours of shine control and lists 40 shades. - Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation. Woman & Home describes tester-observed shine control and a buildable soft-matte finish. Allure separately names Fenty Pro Filt’r Fluid Flex Foundation for combination skin; these are distinct names, so check the exact current product and formula available where you shop rather than treating them as interchangeable. - Glossier Stretch Fluid Foundation. A radiant alternative for someone who dislikes a strongly matte base. Woman & Home testers reported that it looked glowy without becoming excessively shiny during their wear test. Woman & Home’s guide.
For long wear or stronger matte coverage
- Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation. Allure calls it its best overall choice, while Woman & Home says the reformulated version remains long-wearing but felt less strongly mattifying and less robust than the previous version to its testers. The brand describes it as oil-free; check the current local packaging for ingredients. Allure reports 70 shades and an “up to 36 hours” wear promise for the recently reformulated product; the duration is a product claim, not an outcome established for every wearer. - Chanel Ultra Le Teint. Allure’s long-wear pick; the guide’s category makes it a candidate to compare if staying power is high on your list, not a universal guarantee. Allure.
- Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation. A full-coverage matte option named by Allure and Woman & Home. Woman & Home testers said it resisted sweat and transfer, but also cautioned that a heavy application can look mask-like. Allure and Woman & Home.
- Too Faced Born This Way Matte 24 Hour Long-Wear Foundation. Woman & Home describes an oil-free, waterproof formula with medium-to-full coverage. Treat “waterproof” and the wear-time wording in the product name as claims, not a promise of identical performance for all wearers; its coverage may feel more made-up than a sheer tint. Woman & Home.
- Dior Forever Matte Foundation. Woman & Home describes even coverage and day wear, while noting its high price relative to other options in its guide. Consider it if you want a matte comparison and the price works for your budget. Woman & Home.
For lighter feel, a category-specific pick or easy touch-ups
- Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Foundation. Allure’s lightweight pick; it is a useful comparison if comfort and a lighter feel matter more to you than maximum mattifying. Allure does not position it as the most matte choice. Allure.
- L’Oréal Paris Infallible Fresh Wear Foundation. Allure’s drugstore pick. Confirm the exact product name and available shades in your country, since regional product names and ranges can differ. Allure.
- Anastasia Beverly Hills Impeccable Blurring Second Skin Matte Foundation. Glamour’s acne/oily-skin category pick. That editorial category is not a medical claim and does not promise that a foundation will prevent or treat acne. Glamour.
- Pat McGrath Labs Sublime Perfection Weightless Foundation. Glamour’s mature-skin category pick. It may be worth comparing if that editorial category fits your needs, but the recommendation does not establish universal suitability for oily skin. Glamour.
- Jones Road Your Skin Foundation Stick. A portable, radiant-satin stick. Woman & Home describes buildable medium coverage and convenient top-ups, while noting it is not ultra-mattifying. It suits a different priority from a high-control matte base. Woman & Home.
Is liquid or powder foundation better for oily skin?
Neither format wins for everyone. Allure’s makeup-artist guidance favors considering an oil-free or oil-controlling, long-wearing liquid with buildable coverage; the same guide notes powder can be useful for very oily skin and touch-ups. A liquid can offer more flexible coverage and a natural finish, while powder can help reduce shine in targeted areas. Boots notes that an oily complexion can still suit luminosity, with mattifying powder applied to the T-zone as an option. Boots’ guide.
How to make foundation last longer on oily skin
- Choose the finish and coverage first. Start with a formula that suits your preferred look; a primer or powder cannot make an unsuitable texture feel right.
- Apply in a controlled layer. Build coverage where you need it instead of applying a heavy coat everywhere, especially with full-coverage matte formulas.
- Use powder selectively if needed. If shine gathers in the T-zone, a mattifying powder there can preserve luminosity elsewhere. Powder is an optional companion, not a requirement.
- Check wear claims in context. Brand promises and editorial wear observations are not a guarantee for your climate, skin or routine.
Jessica Tierney, Garnier scientific advisor, explains the underlying skin condition this way: “Oily skin is caused by overactive sebaceous glands producing excess sebum,” she explains. Boots’ updated April 9, 2026 guide quotes Tierney; makeup can manage appearance and shine, but choosing a foundation is not treatment for the cause of oil production.

What ingredients or claims should you look for?
Use claims as screening clues, not guarantees. An “oil-free” label does not tell you whether the finish will be comfortable or whether the shade will suit you. Long-wear language describes a product’s intended performance; non-comedogenicity is not established here as a universal outcome and should not be read as medical advice. Ingredient lists and formulas can change, so consult the current package or brand page for the product sold in your market.
