There is no objective scare score for Christmas horror, so this ranking weighs sustained suspense, psychological unease, supernatural or creature threat, violence and gore, and how essential Christmas is to the danger. It favors films that make the holiday part of the fear—not simply films set in winter—and includes several kinds of horror, from slow-burn dread to splatter. The order is an editorial judgment, not a claim that every viewer will find the same film scariest.
How the ranking works
Suspense and psychological unease carry more weight here than spectacle alone; a film can be disturbing without being especially bloody. Christmas matters most when its traditions, folklore, setting, or seasonal timing shape the threat. That approach puts dread-focused films ahead of some more comedy-forward holiday favorites. For context, the British Film Institute describes Black Christmas as “Not just a seminal Christmas horror film but also one of the key prototypes for the slew of imitative slashers that would follow in its wake.” That is an assessment of its influence, not a measurement of its scariness. BFI’s Christmas horror selection and Rotten Tomatoes’ Christmas horror guide offer useful context, but neither supplies a shared scale for how frightening films are.

The 10 scariest Christmas horror movies
-
Black Christmas (1974)
Best for: suspense-led slasher dread. A series of threatening calls and the danger inside a sorority house make this a tense, intimate watch rather than a gore-first one. Christmas is not just decoration: the holiday setting and the seasonal absence of people from the house help make the threat feel isolating. Its place at the top reflects the strength of its suspense and its influence on later slashers, not a claim that it is the most graphic entry here.
-
The Lodge (2019)
Best for: bleak psychological unease. A family retreat in winter provides the setting for an atmosphere the film steadily makes more unsettling. This is a slow-burn choice for viewers who prefer discomfort and uncertainty to a constant stream of attacks. Rotten Tomatoes highlights the film’s unsettling atmosphere and Riley Keough’s performance in its Christmas horror guide.

-
Better Watch Out (2016)
Best for: holiday home-invasion tension. A babysitter and the child she is watching are at the center of a Christmas-set threat that turns a familiar domestic setting into a source of suspense. It is a strong pick if you want a contained thriller with a sinister holiday edge rather than folklore or monsters. Rotten Tomatoes calls it an “adorably sinister holiday horror film” in its guide.
-
Terrifier 3 (2024)
Best for: extreme violence and gore. Art the Clown’s killing spree takes place during the holiday season, and the film is the clearest choice on this list for viewers looking for graphic slasher horror. Its ranking reflects intensity and the Christmas context, not a preference for gore over suspense; viewers who want quieter dread should choose another film here. Rotten Tomatoes describes the holiday-season killing spree in its Christmas horror guide.
Rank #2
The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)- The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
-
Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)
Best for: unsettling folklore with deadpan comedy. The film twists Christmas mythology into a strange, threatening tale, but its humor means it does not sustain the same unbroken dread as the top entries. Rotten Tomatoes describes it as an “unexpectedly delightful crossbreed of deadpan comedy and Christmas horror” in its guide. Choose it when you want holiday folklore and menace with a comic streak.
-
Christmas Bloody Christmas (2022)
Best for: a straightforward robotic-Santa slasher premise. A murderous robotic Santa Claus makes the Christmas imagery central to the threat. Rotten Tomatoes identifies that premise in its Christmas horror guide. It is a fitting option for viewers who want a seasonal killer and slasher action rather than a slow psychological build.

-
A Christmas Horror Story (2015)
Best for: several flavors of supernatural threat in one film. This anthology-style horror includes malevolent spirits and zombie elves in Bailey Downs, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ guide. The variety is its appeal for viewers who want multiple holiday-horror ideas rather than one continuous source of dread.
-
Gremlins (1984)
Best for: creature scares mixed with comedy. Mischievous monsters bring real mayhem, but humor and satire soften the sustained fear compared with the more serious entries above. The British Film Institute notes its balance of laughs and scares; its Christmas horror list is useful context. Pick it for a lively, creature-driven holiday watch rather than unrelenting dread.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Best for: dark fantasy and seasonal atmosphere rather than sustained fright. It is a natural fit for a broad Christmas horror watchlist, but its gothic animation and comic tone make it less frightening than the films ranked above. Rotten Tomatoes’ Christmas horror guide reports a 95% Tomatometer score for the film. That figure aggregates critics’ reviews; it is not a scare rating.
-
Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)
Best for: a Christmas-themed slasher. Its holiday-killer premise makes it a recognizable seasonal horror pick, though it ranks below the entries above for this list’s combined emphasis on sustained tension, psychological unease, threat and the way Christmas shapes the danger. It appears among the candidates in Rotten Tomatoes’ Christmas horror guide, which ranks titles by Tomatometer rather than scariness.

What critics’ scores do—and don’t—tell you
Rotten Tomatoes’ guide is ranked by Tomatometer and was updated December 12, 2025. Its score reflects critics’ reviews, not the amount of fear a film produces. For example, the guide lists 89% for both Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale and Better Watch Out, and 95% for The Nightmare Before Christmas. Those percentages are reception figures, not comparable scare ratings, and they should not be used to reorder this list. Individual reactions to horror also differ: a viewer who dislikes gore may find Terrifier 3 more intense, while someone more affected by isolation and uncertainty may find The Lodge harder to watch.
Where to watch
Streaming catalogs change by date and country. Hulu’s December 12, 2025 guide listed selected holiday horror titles with Hulu or bundle/add-on qualifications, but that dated listing does not establish present-day availability in every region. Check the title in your local service catalog before planning a watch; no current service availability is guaranteed here.
