The best Netflix originals of 2023 span a revenge-fueled drama, an animated samurai saga, a live-action adventure, and films ranging from survival stories to dark thrillers. This is an editorial selection—not a Netflix-certified ranking—based on a blend of critical recognition, craft, originality, and audience interest. Critics’ lists and Netflix viewing figures measure different things, so neither is treated here as a definitive quality score. Netflix availability varies by country and changes over time; check your local catalog before settling in.
The list includes series and films first released in 2023. If you want series only, focus on the entries marked “Series”; this selection does not claim to be a definitive series-only top ten.
How this top ten is selected
Critical recognition, storytelling and craft, originality, and audience interest all inform the choices. Rotten Tomatoes’ year-end guides aggregate critics’ assessments; Netflix’s engagement reports measure viewing. Those are useful but distinct signals, not interchangeable proof that a title is “best.” The ordering is an editorial guide, not an official ranking.
Netflix’s engagement reporting also cautions that comparisons are more meaningful when runtime and premiere dates are taken into account. The figures below are included only where they help show audience interest, not as ratings or all-time totals.

The 10 best Netflix originals of 2023
-
Beef — Series
Why it stands out: A road-rage encounter between two Los Angeles drivers spirals into destructive retaliation. The conflict gives the series room to explore anger and inequality as well as the damage people can do when they refuse to let a grievance go. Time included it among its ten best TV shows of 2023, and Rotten Tomatoes included it in its 2023 TV guide.
Best for: Viewers who like sharp, unsettling character drama that turns an ordinary conflict into something increasingly consequential.
-
Blue Eye Samurai — Animated series
Why it stands out: This animated historical drama follows a mixed-race female samurai seeking revenge in Japan. Its distinctive premise and animated form make it a strong choice for viewers who want period drama with a different visual language. It appeared in Rotten Tomatoes’ 2023 TV guide and a Netflix-focused year-end series list.
Best for: Fans of action and historical stories who are open to animation aimed at adult audiences.

-

Leave the World Behind — Film
Why it stands out: The late-2023 release attracted substantial viewing. Netflix reported 121 million views in its second-half 2023 engagement report. That figure describes the report’s measurement period and method; it is not an all-time tally or a measure of critical quality.
Best for: Viewers who want a tense, unsettling film and are interested in stories built around uncertainty.
-
Leo — Animated film
Why it stands out: Netflix reported 96 million views for Leo in its second-half 2023 engagement report and described it as the service’s biggest animated film to that point. Best for: Households looking for an animated film rather than a live-action drama.

The Killer — Film

Best for: Viewers in the mood for a tightly controlled, dark thriller.
-
