WIRED’s 2014 selection of pop culture’s greatest butlers ranges from a devoted manor-house steward to a sarcastic personal valet—and even a murderous assistant. Graeme McMillan’s list is an informal celebration of characters memorable for their loyalty, wit, breadth of duties, or willingness to go beyond the job. It is not a formally scored ranking or a present-day consensus.
What makes a memorable fictional butler?
McMillan’s list crosses books, comics, television, and film. Its characters do not all hold the same job: some manage a household, while others serve one person, cook, drive, or act as a general assistant. The common thread is the character’s personality and the way service becomes more than a list of domestic tasks.
The years below are the first-appearance dates given in WIRED’s February 15, 2014 feature; they are presented as that article states them, rather than as independently verified release or publication dates.

1. Reginald Jeeves — Jeeves & Wooster (1915)
Jeeves is technically a valet, not a household butler: he serves Bertie Wooster personally rather than running a home. WIRED includes him because his practical domestic help and precisely placed sarcasm make him an unmistakable part of the broader butler tradition.

2. Alfred Pennyworth — Batman (1943)
Alfred looks after Wayne Manor and the Wayne family, but his loyalty extends well beyond household management. WIRED’s case for him rests on the risks he takes while helping Batman, making his service an active part of the hero’s life rather than background support.
3. Lynn Belvedere — Mr. Belvedere (1947)
The original Belvedere is an author who poses as domestic help while researching a novel; the later television version is the one many viewers may know. WIRED highlights his patience and snark, qualities that keep him from becoming a merely efficient housekeeper.

4. Edwin Jarvis — The Avengers (1964)
Jarvis begins as Tony Stark’s personal servant and later attends to the Avengers’ needs at their mansion and subsequent headquarters. His defining quality in WIRED’s account is loyalty in dangerous circumstances.
5. Riff Raff — The Rocky Horror Show (1973)
Riff Raff is Frank N. Furter’s assistant and handyman, an intentionally unconventional fit for a best-butlers list. His ghoulish humor and eventual killing of his employer make him less a model of loyal service than a darkly comic subversion of it.

6. Benson DuBois — Soap / Benson (1977)
Benson moves from work in the Tate household on Soap to the governor’s mansion in its spin-off, Benson. His sarcasm remains central even as his career takes him far beyond household service: the character rises to lieutenant governor.
7. Max — Hart to Hart (1979)
Max serves as butler, chef, and chauffeur to the globe-trotting millionaire investigators. WIRED presents him as straightforward, and sometimes left to clean up problems that have little to do with domestic work.

8. Wadsworth — Clue (1985)
Wadsworth keeps his composure amid murder and mayhem, while the possibility that he is more than a simple butler supplies another hook. WIRED also notes that the film is based on the board game, a connection that makes his story part of a mystery already familiar beyond the screen.
9. Geoffrey Butler — The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990)
Geoffrey’s background, as WIRED describes it, includes Oxford and Olympic athletics before his butler work in the United States and service to the Banks family. His dry, snarky wit—and complaints about answering the door—give the role an edge against the formality of the household.

10. Charles Carson — Downton Abbey (2010)
Carson oversees the pantry, wine cellar, dining room, and male staff. Proud and formal, he is a guardian of household tradition, and WIRED emphasizes his loyalty to Lady Mary as part of what makes him compelling.

Jeeves is explicitly a valet, while Riff Raff is an assistant and handyman; others take on driving, cooking, or duties that grow into something far beyond service. That range is the point of the selection: it treats “butler” as a pop-culture archetype as much as a precise job title. Across the ten, memorable service can mean preserving order, offering a sharp reply, standing by an employer in danger, or simply being the character who has to deal with the mess.
