There is no reliable, like-for-like global ranking of entertainment conventions: organizers count attendance in different ways, and some totals cover more than one event. But recent organizer figures identify a clear group of large, prominent gatherings—from anime and comics to gaming and independent creator markets.
How to read the attendance figures
This is an editorial shortlist, not a ranked top ten. The figures below retain each organizer’s terminology: turnstile attendees, visitors, admissions, tickets sold, or attendees. Those measures are not interchangeable. In particular, Comic Market reports daily admissions, Lucca reports tickets sold, and MCM’s largest annual figure combines three UK shows.
The latest attributable figures vary by event and year; they do not establish which convention is definitively the world’s most popular. Scale, international reach, programming, and subject matter offer useful context alongside attendance.
Ten prominent entertainment conventions
Anime Expo — Los Angeles, United States
The Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation reported more than 422,000 turnstile attendees from over 65 countries at the four-day, sold-out 2026 Anime Expo. The organizer also reported more than 1,400 hours of programming and estimated local economic impact above $115 million. Its focus extends across Japanese animation, games, fashion, music, and art. Anime Expo describes itself as North America’s largest celebration of Japanese pop culture; that distinction is the organizer’s claim. Anime Expo 2026 figures.

Which convention fits your interests?
Attendance alone does not tell you what an event is like or whether it suits your interests. The shortlist covers several distinct formats:
- Anime and Japanese pop culture: Anime Expo and AnimeJapan.
- Gaming: gamescom, Tokyo Game Show, and gamescom asia x Thailand Game Show.
- Comics, media, and broad pop culture: New York Comic Con, San Diego Comic-Con, MCM Comic Con, and Lucca Comics & Games.
- Independent creator works: Comic Market, with its substantial creator circle spaces.
International reach can also help distinguish events: Anime Expo reported attendees from over 65 countries in 2026, gamescom reported visitors from 128 countries in 2025, and gamescom asia x Thailand Game Show reported visitors from 95 countries in 2025. These are organizer-reported figures for different editions, not a standardized measure of global popularity.
