Why Man of Steel tops the list
Costner’s role as Jonathan Kent in the 2013 superhero film puts it well ahead of the rest of this source’s ranking: its reported $668.0 million worldwide total is $244.0 million more than Dances with Wolves, the second-place film.
How to read the ranking
Worldwide grosses are not domestic grosses
This list uses worldwide totals. A film’s domestic gross covers a different market and can produce a different ranking. For example, a 2005 Los Angeles Times list used domestic grosses and limited its scope to films in which Costner was the lead or a principal character. It included The Untouchables among its six entries, while the worldwide ranking above includes all filmography entries with a reported total. Los Angeles Times archive

The figures are estimates, not a single definitive tally
Box Office Watch’s figures are one database’s reported totals, not immutable exact amounts. Differences between databases can reflect their reporting and treatment of releases. Guinness World Records, for example, gives Dances with Wolves a worldwide theatrical figure of $424,200,000 in a record published as of January 15, 2018, compared with Box Office Watch’s rounded $424.0 million. Guinness says, “Records change on a daily basis and are not immediately published online.” Guinness World Records
These totals are not adjusted for inflation
The values above are nominal reported grosses, not estimates of what each film would earn in today’s dollars. Guinness explicitly labels its cited Western-film takings as not adjusted for inflation, and Box Office Watch does not identify its filmography chart as inflation-adjusted. Comparing films across decades by these figures therefore compares reported dollar totals, not equivalent purchasing power. Box Office Watch filmography Guinness World Records
