Tessa Niles’s connections to The Police, David Bowie and Eric Clapton reflect three different parts of her career: a breakthrough tour that led to session work, performances and a recording associated with Bowie, and a longer run of recordings and touring with Clapton. The available accounts do not establish a complete list of her credits with The Police or Bowie, so those connections are best understood through the specific appearances and work they name.
How Tessa Niles’s work with The Police led to session singing
In a 2016 Q&A published by Duran Duran, Niles connects her work with The Police to their high-profile Synchronicity tour and to the next stage of her career. Recalling the transition, she said: “After gaining success with The Police on their high profile ‘Synchronicity’ tour I found myself as the ‘go to ‘ session singer.” The Q&A reproduces the passage from her memoir, Backtrack.
That account supports a specific connection: Niles sang on the Synchronicity tour, and the experience helped establish her as a sought-after session singer. It does not supply a comprehensive list of Police studio recordings, so it would be misleading to treat the tour credit as proof of additional recording credits.
What did Tessa Niles do with David Bowie?
A Jacaranda FM account published in 2015 says Niles performed with Bowie at Live Aid and sang on the Bowie and Mick Jagger recording of “Dancing in the Street.” These are two distinct forms of association: a live appearance and a vocal contribution to a studio recording. The Talk to the Band interview page also identifies a discussion of Live Aid and Bowie, but it is a segment guide rather than a transcript.

Tessa Niles’s recordings and tours with Eric Clapton
Where’s Eric!, a Clapton-focused reference, describes a broader association spanning records, tours and special live events. It says the connection began with August, lists Niles touring with Clapton from 1988 through April 1992, again in October 1997, and on the 1999 Japan tour, and names the George Harrison / Eric Clapton Japan tour, the Crossroads Benefit Concert and Concert for George.

What Niles’s memoir says about session work
Backtrack: The Voice Behind Music’s Greatest Stars is Niles’s own account of her career. In its 2016 Q&A, Duran Duran reproduces her description of recording “Come Undone”: “I added lead vocals on the bridge section.” She also describes responding to direction from Warren Cuccurullo and Nick Rhodes during the session. This offers a first-person example of the session-singing work that followed her touring experience.
Jacaranda FM’s 2015 article described Backtrack as documenting 30 years of work. The Talk to the Band episode page identifies the book as a 2015 memoir and points readers to a listing. Readers looking for Niles’s account of her career can search for Backtrack by Tessa Niles.
