Entry is free, and the official program spans First Nations ceremony and cultural programming, live performances, family activities, Fremantle heritage and a fire-art finale by the water. The October date replaces the event originally planned for 1 June, which was cancelled because of bad weather.
The City of Fremantle describes its event as “FREE ENTRY – everyone welcome.” Here are ten advertised highlights to help you decide what to see. The listing gives the festival’s overall hours, but not a timed schedule for individual performances, so check the organiser’s latest updates before setting out.
1. The traditional Smoking Ceremony
The official program lists a traditional Smoking Ceremony led by Neville Collard JP Nyungar Birdiyia. It is a significant cultural part of the day, not simply another stage performance. The City of Fremantle acknowledges the Whadjuk people as Traditional Owners of Fremantle, also known as Walyalup.
2. The WA Day Festival Corroboree
A Corroboree at Bathers Beach is another First Nations program highlight. Take time to engage respectfully with the event as presented; the festival listing names the experience but does not provide further detail about its format or timing.

4. A live music and dance mix
The program ranges across eras and traditions rather than sticking to one musical style. Advertised highlights include 80s anthems, a Bon Scott tribute, Cuban music, samba, Italian Tarantella, Filipino street dance, dragon dancing and Taiko drumming. The listing does not give set times, so check for updates if you have a particular performance in mind.

5. Carnival Fiesta and roaming characters

Cooking with the Nonnas celebrates Fremantle’s Italian heritage. The listing identifies the experience but does not specify a schedule or describe the cooking activities in detail.

7. The Italians in Fremantle historic walking trail
At the WA Shipwrecks Museum, the Italians in Fremantle historic walking trail offers a heritage-focused change of pace from the performances. The museum also lists free gallery highlights, family activities and character meet-and-greets as part of the program—useful options if you want a museum visit or a break from the outdoor festival.
8. Bricks, Builds & Big Fun
Families can look for Bricks, Builds & Big Fun, alongside creative activities, mini kite making, WA-themed colouring and mascot appearances. These hands-on attractions offer a quieter alternative to the festival’s performance-led highlights.

The day’s advertised finale is SUNSET OF FIRE, described by the organiser as a fire-art performance by the water. It is the standout option for visitors planning to stay through the festival’s closing hours. No performance time beyond the festival’s overall 7pm finish is stated in the listing.

Plan your visit
- Date and hours: Sunday, 11 October 2026, 11am–7pm.
- Location: Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour and Bathers Beach.
- Entry: Free; the City listing says everyone is welcome. The festival is described as family-friendly and suitable for all ages, but licensed areas are restricted to people aged 18 and over.
- Bring: The organiser suggests sunscreen, a hat, a picnic rug and a reusable water bottle. Alcohol cannot be brought into events, and picnic supplies are not permitted inside licensed bar areas.
- Date change: The event planned for 1 June 2026 was cancelled because of bad weather; the current Fremantle listing is for 11 October.
WA Day itself remains on the first Monday in June. The October festival date is a rescheduled event date, not a change to the public holiday. The occasion was renamed from Foundation Day to WA Day in 2012.
