Stopping the Steal is a 2024 documentary about Donald Trump’s effort to challenge the 2020 U.S. presidential election result. Its title refers to the film; “Stop the Steal” was the political slogan and movement that grew around claims the election had been stolen.
What is the documentary about?
Hulu’s synopsis describes Stopping the Steal as an account of Trump’s challenge to the election result, told through former White House staff and Republican officials in Arizona and Georgia who resisted pressure to change vote results. The synopsis places the story between July 2020 and the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. That is the distributor’s description of the film’s scope, not an independent assessment of how completely it covers the events.

Dan Reed directed the documentary. A 2024 Guardian review likewise describes it as a chronological account of the period between the election and January 6.
How is the film different from the Stop the Steal movement?
| Term | What it refers to |
|---|---|
| Stopping the Steal | The 2024 documentary directed by Dan Reed. |
| “Stop the Steal” | A political slogan and campaign used to allege that Trump had been cheated of victory. The phrase predates the 2020 election, but the House Select Committee said it did not become a significant political movement until Trump lost that election. |
How did the movement take shape?
The slogan before the 2020 election
The House Select Committee’s 2022 report says Roger Stone coined “Stop the Steal” in 2016, first in connection with Trump’s Republican primary rivals and later with Hillary Clinton. The phrase’s earlier use is distinct from the larger campaign that formed after the 2020 result.

Organizing after election day
According to the committee, Stone discussed rebuilding the campaign on November 5, 2020. Ali Alexander established “Stop the Steal” as an Alabama entity on November 10, then added a bank account and websites. The committee also describes rallies organized by Alexander, Alex Jones and others.
Who was part of the coalition?
The committee reported that people from several political and activist networks attended some events, including Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, Three Percenters, QAnon adherents, white nationalists and other activists. That account does not mean every rallygoer belonged to an extremist group, or that every person present shared the same affiliations or motives.

What did the January 6 committee find about the election claims?
The House Select Committee concluded that allegations of election fraud were false. It also reported that Trump’s campaign officials, senior Justice Department officials and White House lawyers told him the claims were false. Those are the committee’s findings in its official congressional investigation, rather than a new audit of election administration.
The committee connected Stop the Steal events and other protests in 2020 to the broader buildup to January 6. It said it collected data on 85 right-wing events from January 1, 2020, through January 20, 2021, spanning opposition to COVID-19 restrictions, racial-justice protests and later the perceived theft of Trump’s victory. The 85 figure covers that wider event set; it is not a count of Stop the Steal rallies alone.

What did Trump say about the slogan on January 6?
The Congressional Record transcribes Trump saying, “Together, we will — and this is in all caps — Stop the Steal.” In context, the line was part of his speech asserting that the election had been stolen. It records his rhetoric; it is not evidence that fraud occurred.
Where can you watch Stopping the Steal?
Hulu has a listing for the documentary, which establishes the service’s synopsis. Streaming catalogs change, and the listing alone does not establish its current availability in every country or on other services.

How should viewers assess the documentary’s account?
Keep the film’s presentation, the movement’s allegations and the committee’s findings distinct. Hulu’s synopsis and the Guardian review help identify the documentary’s stated scope and chronological approach; the committee report is the principal source for its account of organizers, events and findings. Those sources establish useful context, but they do not by themselves support a comprehensive judgment about the film’s treatment of every participant or piece of contrary evidence.
