Is Stranger Things over after Season 5?
Yes, for the original series and its central Hawkins story. Netflix identifies Season 5 as the show’s fifth and final season in its official series listing. The finale ends with the surviving friends completing one last Dungeons & Dragons campaign in the Wheelers’ basement, after which Mike shuts the door.
Matt and Ross Duffer told Netflix that the basement scene had been planned for a long time and was meant to show the characters moving on from childhood. Ross Duffer described the next generation heard playing in the background as having their own childhoods, adding that “our story is over once [Mike] shuts that door.” The creators’ explanation frames the moment as closure, not a handoff to a new group continuing the same Hawkins adventure. What happens to the characters after the finale?
The coda gives the original characters different paths forward rather than setting up another season of their shared adventures. In the Duffers’ explanation to Netflix:

Netflix describes Tales From ’85 as a story in which familiar characters encounter new monsters and a paranormal mystery. The company’s March 18, 2026 project guide also covers Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen and The Boroughs; those are separate shows associated with the Duffers’ Netflix work, not Stranger Things spinoffs.

Will there be another live-action Stranger Things show?
The official Netflix material cited here confirms the animated Tales From ’85 and other franchise projects, but does not establish a distinct live-action spinoff’s premise, release window, or creative team. Reports about possible future live-action stories should therefore be treated as reports, not as a confirmed Netflix announcement, unless Netflix or the creators make one.
