Task is an HBO crime drama starring Mark Ruffalo as an FBI agent leading an investigation into violent robberies in the working-class suburbs around Philadelphia. Created by Brad Ingelsby of Mare of Easttown, the series follows the investigation alongside the family man played by Tom Pelphrey who is tied to the crimes.
What is Task about?
The series centers on an FBI task force pursuing violent robberies in Philadelphia-area suburbs. Ruffalo plays the agent leading the investigation; Pelphrey plays a seemingly ordinary family man connected to the robberies. HBO’s official series page describes the core conflict as an FBI agent trying to stop robberies led by an apparently unassuming family man.

The working-class suburban setting gives the crime story a specific regional frame rather than making it a general big-city police procedural. The central tension comes from the contrast between the task force’s investigation and the unassuming appearance of the man linked to the robberies.
Who made the series, and how is it connected to Mare of Easttown?
Brad Ingelsby, the creator of Mare of Easttown, created Task. That is a connection through its creator, not evidence that the shows share characters or a story universe. BGR’s May 15, 2025 announcement coverage identified the series as a seven-episode HBO Original; that figure reflects the announcement and is not treated here as a verified current season count. BGR’s announcement also reported the Ruffalo and Pelphrey casting and the Philadelphia-area setting.
