Tash Peterson staged a topless protest outside Perth Magistrates Court on 15 March 2022, minutes after her trial over a separate 2020 protest at Boatshed Market concluded. Police issued move-on notices after negotiating with the group for about 45 minutes; Peterson was not arrested, according to PerthNow’s report, published 16 March 2022.
What happened outside the courthouse
After the trial ended on Tuesday, 15 March 2022, Peterson and two other protesters demonstrated outside the courthouse. Tape covered Peterson’s nipples, and the words “dairy is rape” were written across her chest. One of the other protesters was a topless woman covered in red paint.
Police asked the group to cover up. Following about 45 minutes of negotiation, officers issued move-on notices. Peterson then removed the tape, and the group eventually left. PerthNow reported that she was not arrested.
Peterson called the police request sexist. Asked whether the demonstration might affect the trial that had just concluded, she said: “I don’t care what happens to me, I’m just here to speak up for the animals,” PerthNow reported.

What the trial was about
The court case concerned an earlier protest at Boatshed Market in Cottesloe on 5 December 2020—not the demonstration outside court. PerthNow reported that Peterson entered the store wearing a cow onesie tied around her waist and black-and-white body paint, and shouted about dairy farming.
According to the report, she initially told the manager she intended to stage a silent protest near the cheese section, but began shouting less than two minutes later. CCTV and video Peterson had uploaded to social media were played in court.

The positions presented in court
Prosecutors argued that Peterson’s conduct at the market was disorderly because it was offensive. Peterson described her actions as political expression about the treatment of animals and said she was using her body creatively to communicate her message. These were the parties’ positions as reported; they are not a ruling on the legal question.
Store owner Craig Skead testified that the incident was confronting and disruptive. PerthNow quoted him as saying: “Customers were afraid. There were kids there. They were moved away by their mother. They were young children.” Store manager Leandro Michellin said shoppers appeared uncomfortable.

What was known about the court decision
PerthNow’s 16 March 2022 report said Magistrate Sarah Olive reserved her decision. It did not report the later outcome, so the account establishes neither a finding against Peterson nor a dismissal of the charge.
