Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game trades the usual fantasy-adventure focus on combat and peril for Hobbit routines: tending a garden, foraging, fishing, cooking for neighbors, and helping Bywater grow into an official village. That makes “the cozy side of Tolkien” a fair description of its premise—not a guarantee that every part of the finished game is equally engaging.
What kind of Tolkien game is Tales of the Shire?
It is a Hobbit life sim, not a combat-centered adventure. Developed by Wētā Workshop, it places the player in Bywater, where the central work is domestic and communal: make a Hobbit, settle into a home, and help the neighborhood flourish. The developer’s current page lists a July 29, 2025 launch on PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S (Wētā Workshop).
The focus reflects a stated creative intention. Wētā Workshop co-founder, co-CEO, and chief creative officer Richard Taylor described the game as a quieter way for fans to discover a less-explored corner of the universe. That is the studio’s aim, rather than an independent assessment of how fully the final game achieves it.
What do you do in the game?
The routine combines home-making, gathering, food, and social visits. Official descriptions say players can customize their Hobbit and arrange furniture with grid-free placement. Outside the home, they can tend a garden, fish, forage, trade, and cook. The Steam listing also describes seasonal crops and weather, clubs, daily activities, familiar characters, and community progression (Steam).

Gather ingredients and make meals
Food is more than a side activity in the game’s pitch. Players gather or grow ingredients, prepare meals, and share them with other Hobbits. Take-Two’s original announcement linked meals and relationships to Bywater’s goal of becoming a village (Take-Two’s announcement).
Build a home and a neighborhood
Personalizing a home supplies the private, creative part of the loop; visiting neighbors and developing relationships supplies the social one. The larger through-line is helping Bywater flourish and achieve official village status. That is the game’s stated objective, not a promise of a sprawling quest campaign.
Rank #2
- Set in the peaceful village of Bywater, near Hobbiton, players create and personalize their own Hobbit character, engaging in activities such as cooking, fishing, foraging, gardening, and home decorating. The game features a grid-free decorating system, allowing for creative freedom in designing your Hobbit home. With a focus on relaxation and community building, players can build relationships with fellow Hobbits and contribute to the growth of Bywater. The game is set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, offering a tranquil experience without combat or major conflicts.
How does the finished game compare with the cozy premise?
Post-launch reviews agree that domestic activities are central, but they differ in how satisfying the routine feels over time. PC Gamer’s Christopher Livingston praised cooking and foraging while criticizing waits, quest errands, and the limited range of other activities; PC Gamer scored the game 67 (PC Gamer’s review). GamesRadar+ liked the cooking and relationship-based upgrade system but found the cycle repetitive and the village less engaging over time. Its reviewer said their main-quest playthrough took 13 hours—one reviewer’s experience, not an advertised completion time (GamesRadar+’s review).
TechRadar’s review of the Xbox Series S version was more negative about the pace, plot, and execution. It also noted options including text size, camera sensitivity, camera and cooking assistance, and difficulty (TechRadar’s review). These are outlet-specific judgments, not a single consensus verdict.

Who is the slow pace likely to suit?
The premise is most appealing if the pleasure is in unhurried routines, cooking, decorating, and getting to know a small community. If you want frequent objectives, expansive exploration, a quest-led story, or deep farming systems, the reviewers’ reservations are worth weighing against the game’s stated focus. That is an expectation-based guide, not a firsthand recommendation.
Availability claims should be kept current: Wētā Workshop lists PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Take-Two’s 2024 announcement gave a different planned release date and mentioned Netflix Games, but that historical plan does not establish current Netflix availability; the developer’s launch page is the relevant source for the release date and platforms.
