Talk to Me is a 2023 supernatural horror film by Australian twin filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou. Sophie Wilde stars as Mia, a young woman whose grief makes a séance with an embalmed hand feel like more than a party game. The film’s central scare comes from what happens when its participants push past the séance’s limits.
What is Talk to Me about?
A group of friends discover that an embalmed hand can let them contact spirits. The séance becomes a thrilling social ritual, but one encounter goes dangerously wrong. Mia, played by Sophie Wilde, is grieving her mother; her need for connection gives the supernatural premise its emotional stakes.

The film makes the hand both a means of contact and a symbol of connection. In a July 2023 interview with TIME, Danny Philippou connected the idea to a personal memory: after a car accident when he was 16, his sister held his hand and “The shaking stopped. The touch of someone I love brought me out of it.” That is the filmmaker’s explanation of an inspiration, not dialogue from the film.
How does the séance work?
As described in TIME’s account of the film’s fictional rules, participants light a candle, clasp the hand and say “talk to me.” They must not leave the door open for more than 90 seconds. The warning from Hayley, one of the characters, is that the spirits “They’ll want to stay.” The countdown turns the séance into a party challenge, while the danger lies in treating its limits as negotiable.

What gives the horror its emotional weight?
Mia’s grief shapes why she is drawn to the séance: contact with the dead offers the possibility of connection when she is vulnerable. The film’s supernatural danger and its emotional conflict therefore meet in the same act—reaching across a boundary in search of someone who is gone.
Danny Philippou told TIME that the filmmakers wanted violence to be rooted in character and to have meaning rather than feel gratuitous. That approach helps explain why the film’s frightening moments are tied to its characters and choices, not just to shocks.

Apple TV’s catalog listing, accessed in 2026, gives a runtime of 1 hour 34 minutes and a US R rating for strong and bloody violent content, some sexual material, and language throughout. Ratings are territory-specific: Australian distributor Maslow Entertainment lists MA15+ for strong horror themes, violence and coarse language.
