She later recalled meeting him at school, falling in love, having two children together and separating quickly—while remaining close friends. Their marriage was an important early chapter in her life, but not the definition of it: von Furstenberg went on to build a public identity as a fashion designer, philanthropist and author.
Who was Diane von Furstenberg married to?
Her first husband was Prince Egon von Fürstenberg, also known in coverage as Egon von Fürstenberg. Diane’s own accounts describe a relationship that began when they were students and led to marriage in 1969. British Vogue’s biography and the Kunhardt Film Foundation’s interview material identify 1969 as their wedding year.

How did Diane von Furstenberg meet Egon?
In a 2012 interview with CNN, Diane said she met Egon at school and that they loved one another. Her later recollections place their courtship before their move to America and the start of her fashion career. In a 2019 first-person essay for British Vogue, she wrote: “I had just become engaged to Prince Egon von Fürstenberg, the greatest catch in Europe at the time.” Her essay also recounts that she became pregnant with their first child while they were engaged and told Egon by telegram.
Did Diane and Egon von Fürstenberg have children?
Yes. Diane told CNN they had two children. Her account of telling Egon about her first pregnancy by telegram offers a glimpse of their life before the wedding; it is her retrospective description, not a claim that the pregnancy followed their marriage.

Why did they separate, and did they remain friends?
Diane told CNN that they separated quickly, but stayed close. In her words, “we separated quickly, but we stayed the best of friends.” She also said in that 2012 interview that Egon had died before she spoke with CNN.
The sources cited here establish their wedding year and Diane’s description of a quick separation, but they do not settle an exact legal divorce date. Secondary accounts give differing years, so it would be misleading to present one as certain.

The marriage within Diane von Furstenberg’s wider life
The relationship belongs in the story of Diane’s early adulthood, alongside motherhood, relocation and the beginnings of her work in fashion. It should not eclipse the career and public life she built in her own right. Her official biography describes her as a fashion designer, philanthropist and author.
For a longer first-person account of her life, readers can look to The Woman I Wanted to Be, the memoir identified in CBS News coverage. The documentary Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge is another portrait of her life; DVF says it premiered at Tribeca in 2024 and launched on Hulu and Disney+ internationally. Disney+ lists it as a biography documentary; availability can vary by territory.
