What did Sydney Sweeney say about the American Eagle ad?
Her November 2025 comments
In a November 2025 interview with GQ, Sweeney said the reaction to the campaign had surprised her. She said she had not been tempted to issue a formal statement defending or explaining the ads, telling GQ, as reported by Variety: “I’ve always believed that I’m not here to tell people what to think.” She also said she loved jeans and the brand, and that the controversy did not affect her. Her December 2025 comments
In a December interview with People, Sweeney addressed the effect of staying silent more directly. She said, “I’m against hate and divisiveness,” and added: “In the past my stance has been to never respond to negative or positive press but recently I have come to realize that my silence regarding this issue has only widened the divide, not closed it.” These comments mark a shift in emphasis: she continued to describe her own approach to press, but also recognized that silence had not helped close the disagreement. Why was the Sydney Sweeney jeans ad controversial?
The pun and the campaign imagery
American Eagle launched its Fall ’25 campaign on July 23, 2025, under the line “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” The company described it as a return to denim dressing and a celebration of its jeans. Some campaign videos played on the sound-alike words “jeans” and “genes,” crossing out “genes” in favor of “jeans.” One teaser referred to inherited traits and ended, “My jeans are blue.” The Guardian reported that critics online called the campaign tone-deaf or compared its language to eugenics and white supremacy. Other viewers saw an ordinary denim advertisement or considered the criticism exaggerated.

The criticism was about how the wordplay and inherited-traits reference could be interpreted, including concerns about beauty standards and racialized ideas of heredity. Those interpretations do not, by themselves, establish the private intent of Sweeney or the campaign’s creators.
What American Eagle said
On August 1, American Eagle said, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” is and always was about the jeans. Its statement added: “Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.” The Associated Press also reported that American Eagle President and Executive Creative Director Jennifer Foyle had described the language before launch as “clever, even provocative” and “definitely going to push buttons.” Attribute those remarks to AP’s account; they are not evidence, on their own, of a particular political or ideological intent.

How did the public respond?
A YouGov survey conducted August 7–11, 2025, asked U.S. adult citizens whether the campaign’s wordplay was appropriate or inappropriate. Of 1,128 respondents, 59% said appropriate, 17% said inappropriate and 24% were unsure. YouGov used an online opt-in panel weighted to represent U.S. adult citizens and reported a weighted-adjusted margin of error of ±3.9%. The results describe that dated survey, not every audience’s view or the intent behind the campaign. YouGov published the poll.

Yes. On April 15, 2026, American Eagle announced “Syd for Short,” another campaign with Sweeney, this time promoting AE jean shorts. The release names the Low-Rise Shortie among the featured styles. The follow-up establishes that the partnership continued; it does not show that the 2025 controversy caused a sales result. American Eagle announced the campaign.
