Sunrise host Nat Barr became tearful during a Telethon panel in October 2024 after holding up a front page from The West Australian featuring Noah Johnson. Barr said she had met Noah and his parents earlier that day; the story and her encounter with the family prompted her appeal for viewers to read the article and donate to help children like him.
What happened at the Telethon panel
In an account published by PerthNow reporter Taylor Renouf on 19 October 2024, Barr recalled meeting Noah and his parents at a breakfast briefing before she saw the newspaper’s front page. Later, during a Telethon panel, she held up the page and became emotional as she spoke about the boy.
Renouf’s report quotes Barr recalling: “I met this little boy in a wheelchair and he said his name was Noah, we had a little chat and I chatted to his parents.”
Why Noah’s story moved Barr
The October 2024 report described Noah as 12 and said he had been diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma seven months earlier. It reported that he had undergone 14 rounds of chemotherapy and 31 rounds of radiation by that point. Those figures describe the situation reported at the time, not Noah’s current health or treatment status.

The front-page story included a statement attributed to Noah: “I don’t want you to get sad mummy, but sometimes I think it would be easier if I died.” The report presents this as his words in the article; it should be understood in that context, not as evidence of a prognosis or of circumstances beyond what the account described.

Barr urged viewers to read the newspaper story, saying, “Did you read it? Did you read The West Australian this morning? If you didn’t, go read it.” She also said: “So, it’s about him and it’s about every single kid whose life can be changed.” Her comments connected Noah’s story to Telethon’s appeal to support children.
