Mei and the Baby Cat Bus, also known as Mei and the Kittenbus, is a short follow-up to My Neighbor Totoro—not a feature-length sequel. It was part of Studio Ghibli’s 2024 Cannes celebration, but reports also describe an earlier screening at a U.S. fundraiser, so Cannes should not be called its first-ever overseas showing without qualification.
What is the Totoro sequel?
Mei and the Baby Cat Bus follows Mei and the Kittenbus in a brief return to the world of the 1988 film. The Associated Press described it as a short follow-up, and a later account uses the alternate title Mei and the Kittenbus. Time Out Tokyo reported a 14-minute runtime in its 2023 preview of a planned Ghibli Park screening; that is the runtime reported there, not a figure independently confirmed by the studio.
The Cannes event was not an announcement of a new feature film. The work discussed here is a short made for the Studio Ghibli Museum, and the available reporting does not establish a feature-length Totoro sequel.
What happened at Cannes in 2024?
At the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Studio Ghibli’s honorary Palme d’Or celebration included four shorts made for the Ghibli Museum outside Tokyo. The Associated Press reported that the shorts had not previously been shown outside Japan. Its May 20, 2024 report establishes the Cannes celebration, but not the short’s precise screening time or date within the festival. Read the Associated Press report.

A later Slashfilm account says Mei and the Kittenbus had also screened at a U.S. fundraiser before Cannes. That conflicts with describing Cannes as its first-ever overseas screening. The reviewed accounts do not define whether the earlier event was private, public, or otherwise distinct, so the safest description is that Cannes was a significant overseas showing, not necessarily the first one. The reports establish this short follow-up, not a new feature sequel. They also do not establish a current general-public viewing route or a home-video release for the short. Time Out Tokyo’s 2023 article described a planned November screening at Ghibli Park in Japan and reported the 14-minute runtime; it predates Cannes and does not show that the short is currently available to the public. GKIDS lists Blu-ray and DVD editions of the original 1988 My Neighbor Totoro, including standard formats and a steelbook. Those editions are for the feature film, not Mei and the Baby Cat Bus. GKIDS specifies Region A/1, so check player compatibility before buying. See GKIDS’ edition details.
