Spoilers for Stranger Things Season 4, Episode 7, “The Massacre at Hawkins Lab.” Henry Creel, the orderly who befriends Eleven at the Nina Project, is the lab’s first numbered subject, One—and the person who killed the other children. Eleven did not commit the massacre: she banished Henry into another dimension, where he became Vecna. Meanwhile, Dustin’s theory helps the group in the Upside Down locate a way out, and Nancy is left trapped in Vecna’s trance at the episode’s close.
Episode 7 at a glance
Netflix’s official chapter title is “The Massacre at Hawkins Lab.” Rotten Tomatoes lists it as Season 4, Episode 7, with an original air date of May 27, 2022. Netflix’s episode guide describes the chapter’s story, while Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing provides the episode number and date.
What really happened at Hawkins Lab?
Henry Creel was One
At the Nina Project, Eleven revisits memories of her time at Hawkins Lab. The friendly orderly who helps her is revealed to be Henry Creel, Brenner’s first experimental child. At the lab, he was known as One.
Henry, not Eleven, killed the other children
Eleven’s memories initially leave room for the fear that she caused the massacre. The episode overturns that impression: Henry is responsible for the deaths at the lab. In the confrontation that follows, Eleven uses her powers to send him into the Upside Down. He becomes Vecna.

The episode links Henry’s transformation into Vecna to Eleven sending him into the Upside Down. That explains how Henry became the figure at the center of this season’s threat; it does not establish that Eleven is responsible for every later event in the Upside Down.
