The possible early Vecna clue is a clock-like chime heard during Will Byers’s encounter in the season-one premiere. Later viewers have connected it to the grandfather clock associated with Vecna—but that connection is an interpretation, not proof the show deliberately planted Vecna in the scene. Ross Duffer later said Vecna had not yet been designed when season one was made.
What is the possible Vecna clue in season one?
In “Chapter One: The Vanishing of Will Byers,” Will encounters a menacing figure while riding home. Later coverage points to a clock-like chime during the sequence as a possible early echo of Vecna, whose presence in season four is associated with a grandfather clock. Looper notes that it is unclear whether the season-one sound was intended to be a clock chime at all: Looper’s account.
That makes the sound an intriguing detail to notice on a rewatch, but not confirmation that Vecna was already part of the story. The distinction matters: a later resemblance can invite a theory without establishing the creators’ original intent.
What did Ross Duffer say about the figure?
Parade reports that co-creator Ross Duffer identified the silhouette Will sees as the Demogorgon, not Vecna, and said Vecna had not yet been designed during season one. In a report attributing the remarks to an interview with Digital Spy, Duffer is quoted as saying: “Back in season 1, we obviously hadn’t designed Vecna or anything.” Parade’s report.

So the silhouette itself should not be described as Vecna. The more cautious claim is that viewers have retrospectively linked the clock-like sound in the encounter to Vecna’s later imagery.
Does the lock-opening moment prove Vecna was there?
No. The lock is a separate detail from the silhouette and the chime. Parade also attributes this comment to Duffer: “I will say the lock that gets opened telepathically, the Demogorgons aren’t telepathic.” The reported observation leaves the lock’s cause unresolved; it does not establish that Vecna opened it, or identify another character as responsible.

How does this differ from season four clues?
Season four supplies separate retrospective clues about Vecna’s identity, including the lab victims’ injuries, Henry Creel’s survival, and Jamie Campbell Bower’s credits. Those are distinct from the season-one chime: they concern season four’s revelations, while the chime is an ambiguous sound that some viewers connect backward to Vecna.
