Stevie Nicks’s best-documented romance was with musician Lindsey Buckingham, her collaborator before both joined Fleetwood Mac. Their relationship was intermittent and had ended by the band’s early major success, though their musical partnership continued. Interviews and reporting also discuss Nicks’s relationships with Don Henley, Mick Fleetwood and Joe Walsh, but the available accounts do not support a complete, precisely dated timeline for all of them.
Who did Stevie Nicks date?
Credible interviews and reporting identify Lindsey Buckingham, Don Henley, Mick Fleetwood and Joe Walsh among the people Nicks was romantically involved with or discussed as important relationships. The level of detail varies: Buckingham’s partnership with Nicks is especially well documented because it was also a musical collaboration, while accounts of the other relationships rely more on retrospective interviews and secondary reporting.

That distinction matters. Nicks’s own recollections establish how she described particular relationships; they do not always supply exact dates. A broad chronology is possible, but a year-by-year dating timeline would imply more certainty than these sources provide.
How did Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham’s relationship begin?
Nicks met Buckingham as a young musician in California. They worked together in the band Fritz, then formed a duo and recorded Buckingham Nicks before joining Fleetwood Mac. Biography.com describes them as romantically involved for several years, and the Associated Press’s 2025 report on the album’s reissue describes them as a couple when they made the record. These accounts establish an early romantic and creative partnership, but not a precise start date.

Why did Nicks and Buckingham break up?
Their relationship was not steady throughout. In his Library of Congress interview, Buckingham characterized it as on-and-off, with periods when they were not together. In a 1982 interview, Nicks described the relationship as tumultuous and passionate. Taken together, those recollections support describing it as intermittent and difficult, not assigning the breakup a single definitive cause.

By the time Fleetwood Mac reached early major success, the romance had ended. Their creative partnership did not: they continued working together in the band, and Fleetwood Mac’s music became closely associated with the personal fractures among its members. The Library of Congress’s interview with Lindsey Buckingham and the archived 1982 interview with Nicks offer first-person perspectives; their retrospective accounts should be read as such.

Don Henley
Nicks discussed Don Henley in a 1982 interview, and later reporting includes him among the significant relationships associated with her life. The available accounts do not establish a full, consistently dated chronology, so it is safer to identify Henley as a reported relationship than to assign it firm dates.

Mick Fleetwood
Nicks also spoke about a relationship with Fleetwood, her bandmate. The Guardian’s 2011 interview connects that relationship to “Beauty And The Beast.” That is a specific reported connection, not a basis for treating every song from the period as having one confirmed romantic subject.
Joe Walsh
In a 2003 You Magazine interview, Nicks discussed Joe Walsh as a major heartbreak. That description is her characterization of the relationship, not an independently measurable ranking of her romances. The interview is useful evidence of how she remembered it, but it does not by itself establish a complete set of dates.

What the record supports—and what it doesn’t
- Strongly established: Nicks and Buckingham were romantic partners and musical collaborators before Fleetwood Mac; their relationship was on-and-off and later ended.
- Also supported: interviews and reporting discuss Henley, Fleetwood and Walsh as important relationships in Nicks’s life.
- Not established as a complete timeline: exact dates and a uniform sequence for every relationship. Treat reported chronology as approximate unless a cited account gives a specific date.
- Song connections need attribution: the reported link between Fleetwood and “Beauty And The Beast” should not be generalized into a definitive explanation for all of Nicks’s songwriting.
