It is an end to Clementine’s journey and to an era of Telltale development—not the end of The Walking Dead franchise.
What is The Walking Dead: The Final Season?
Released on August 14, 2018, The Walking Dead: The Final Season is a four-episode, single-player adventure game published by Skybound Games and developed by Telltale Games. The Xbox Store listing identifies the season and its four episodes.
The story follows Clementine and AJ after years on the road. They reach a secluded school that might become a home, but the setting does not remove the danger or the hard decisions. Clementine must now guide AJ: the child she once protected is learning from her how to survive and how to treat other people.
Why Clementine’s story comes full circle
Earlier in the series, Lee taught Clementine how to face a collapsing world. In the final season, she occupies the mentor’s role herself. James Windeler, the season’s lead writer, described that reversal as the natural culmination of her arc: “For us, it was natural and inevitable that she come full circle and step into Lee’s shoes.” Windeler made the comment in a PlayStation.Blog interview published August 2, 2018.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That inheritance is more than a practical lesson in staying alive. Windeler said the story asks what the right way to live is, not just how to survive. Players’ decisions help shape Clementine’s character and AJ’s developing moral outlook, making their relationship the season’s emotional center.
How the choices and combat work
In its pre-release description, Xbox Wire characterized the game as choice-driven storytelling with decisions that can branch the narrative. It also highlighted unscripted combat and an over-the-shoulder orbital camera. Those are the platform’s descriptions of the design, not a claim that every choice produces a separate long-term storyline.

The design connects moment-to-moment play to Clementine’s new responsibility. Choices are not only about what she does under immediate pressure; they also frame what AJ sees her do and the values he may carry forward.
How Skybound finished the season after Telltale shut down
Telltale shut down while the season was in production, interrupting work on its final two episodes. In an April 16, 2019 GameSpot interview, creative director Kent Mudle and Skybound Games CEO Ian Howe explained how Skybound arranged to bring back former Telltale developers and complete the season after a pause for legal arrangements.

At the time of the shutdown, Mudle said Episode 3 was about halfway through development: voice work had been recorded and its visuals were in rough form. Episode 4 had completed its first round of voice work. The account makes clear that the finished season was not simply released unchanged after Telltale closed; Skybound helped resume and complete the production with former staff.
Howe recalled that Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead, urged the team to “let’s just go get the story finished.” The line is Howe’s account of the meeting, as reported by GameSpot, rather than a direct interview with Kirkman in that article.

Mudle also said the developers had intended the game to be the last Walking Dead title and a final tribute to Telltale’s classic approach of choices and waiting. That statement describes the team’s intention at the time; it should not be read as a claim about the franchise’s current or future status.

The Xbox Store listing identifies the digital season. A secondary reference reports physical releases for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on March 26, 2019. It says the season-pass disc included the first three episodes, with the remaining episode accessed by download. Because that packaging detail is not established by an official source in the available references, check the specific copy rather than assuming a disc or cartridge contains all four episodes.
