Tehran is a tense, character-led espionage thriller about a Mossad hacker-agent operating under a false identity in Iran’s capital. Calling it “seriously underrated” is a defensible opinion, but review scores cannot prove that a show is overlooked. What they do support is a simpler case: critics and viewers have rated it favorably, and Apple has released three seasons, with a fourth renewed.

What is Tehran about?

The series follows Tamar Rabinyan, played by Niv Sultan, a Mossad hacker-agent sent to Tehran under a false identity. Its premise brings undercover espionage and hacking into a contemporary Israel–Iran setting, but the geopolitical backdrop is fictional drama, not a documentary account.

Apple’s synopsis frames the story around more than operational suspense: after the events of season 2, Tamar must reinvent herself and regain Mossad support to survive. That personal predicament gives the series a second source of tension alongside the mission itself. Apple classifies it as a TV-MA drama and thriller.

Is Tehran worth watching?

It is a good fit if you want a contemporary spy thriller where shifting loyalties, identity and personal ties matter as much as tradecraft. Season 1’s Rotten Tomatoes critics’ consensus points to tightly plotted twists and a balance between geopolitical and personal storytelling. That mix is likely more appealing to viewers who enjoy morally charged premises than to those seeking a detached, fact-based account of the region.

The reception is favorable, though not unanimous. In a May 2022 review indexed by Metacritic, Ed Power of The Telegraph praised the show’s atmosphere and nuanced portrait of Iran. Another Metacritic review excerpt criticized how far Iranian characters are defined by political allegiance. Those differing responses are a useful reminder that the series’ treatment of its setting will not land the same way for every viewer.

What the review scores show

Aggregator scores are snapshots, not measures of how widely known or watched a series is. As of October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed a 92% average Tomatometer across 31 reviews and an 86% Popcornmeter across 500+ ratings. For season 1, it listed 94% across 18 critic reviews and 85% across 250+ ratings. Metacritic listed a 72 Metascore based on 12 critic reviews and a 6.7 user score based on 87 user ratings. These figures may change as ratings and reviews are added; they support “well reviewed” more directly than a claim that the show is under-recognized.

Where can you watch Tehran?

Apple lists Tehran on Apple TV. Availability and subscription terms can vary by territory, so check the service’s catalog where you live. An Apple TV 4K device is not required; Apple lists it as one possible viewing screen, not a condition for watching.

How many seasons are there, and is season 4 confirmed?

Apple’s series page lists three seasons. Season 3 premiered January 9, 2026, and its listed finale, “Day Zero,” aired February 27, 2026. Apple announced the season 4 renewal on December 4, 2025, but that announcement did not give a premiere date.

Season 3 cast and credits

Season 3 brings back Niv Sultan, Shaun Toub and Shila Ommi. New additions include Hugh Laurie as Eric Peterson, a South African nuclear inspector, along with Sasson Gabai, Bahar Pars and Phoenix Raei. Apple credits Dana Eden, Moshe Zonder and Maor Kohn as series creators; Tony Saint and Simon Allen wrote season 3, directed by Daniel Syrkin.

What kind of spy drama is it?

Tehran is best approached as suspenseful fiction shaped by a politically charged setting, not as a neutral guide to Israeli or Iranian society. Its appeal rests on the collision of espionage, personal relationships and questions of allegiance. If you are choosing between spy shows, consider whether you want a contemporary geopolitical premise, character relationships alongside mission mechanics, and international-language storytelling; the cited reviews do not establish a definitive ranking against other series.
