Taylor Swift’s alleged 2016 album Karma is a fan theory, not a confirmed release. Fans connect the idea to her earlier album schedule, the upheaval of 2016, and later video and interview clues; none of those establishes that a completed album existed. The released song “Karma” is a separate track on Midnights.
What the “Karma” album theory claims
The theory holds that Swift may have planned a sixth studio album for 2016, which fans often call Karma, and then shelved or reshaped the project before releasing Reputation in 2017. The name and the proposed album are not confirmed by the cited sources. There is no verified tracklist or count of songs written or recorded for such a project.
The idea gained traction partly because Swift’s albums had followed a roughly two-year cadence through 1989 (2014), making a 2016 release seem plausible to fans. The theory links that expected timing to 2016’s public backlash and suggests the next project became Reputation. That connection is conjecture, not established history.
Which clues fans cite—and what they show
“The Man” video
In the video for “The Man,” fans point to graffiti reading “KARMA” among album titles and a nearby “MISSING” sign. They interpret the juxtaposition as a reference to a missing era. It is a visual detail, not confirmation that an album was planned or completed.

“73 Questions” and “Look What You Made Me Do”
In Vogue’s “73 Questions,” Swift says, “Karma is real.” Fans sometimes read the line as a hint. Others cite the “TS6” marking and orange-jumpsuit imagery in the “Look What You Made Me Do” video as signs of a trapped or abandoned era. These interpretations are not independent evidence of an album.
Teen Vogue’s De Elizabeth cautions: “Of course, there’s no way to know if any of these clues amount to anything.” Teen Vogue’s explainer describes the idea as a theory about a secret unreleased album, not a confirmed project.

What contemporaneous reporting says about 2016
On August 10, 2016, TIME reported that fans were speculating about an October album because two years had passed since 1989. The pattern was not exact: Fearless had been released in November 2008. TIME also reported that Scott Borchetta, then president and CEO of Big Machine Records, replied “NOPE” when a fan raised the October-album speculation.
That response is evidence against treating an October 2016 release as confirmed. It does not establish whether Swift privately wrote or recorded songs, or whether any private work was later reworked. A denied release expectation is not proof for or against every version of the broader fan theory.

Does Swift’s ownership letter confirm the rumor?
No. In a letter on her official website about regaining her music, Swift wrote, “All the music I’ve ever made… now belongs… to me.” She also mentioned unreleased songs generally and wrote of Reputation: “There will be a time (if you’re into the idea) for the unreleased Vault tracks from that album to hatch.” The letter discusses her catalog and possible Reputation vault tracks; it does not mention an album called Karma.

There is no verified album or tracklist to listen to as “the lost Karma album.” The officially released song “Karma” can be heard on Midnights; a physical edition of that album is simply a way to hear the released track, not a vault release or material known to originate in 2016.
