If a teen text leaves you wondering whether “shook,” “drip” or “cheugy” is praise or a put-down, start with the surrounding conversation. These words have useful general meanings, but slang shifts across communities and tone can change the message.
What these three slang terms generally mean
The definitions below are concise starting points, not rules for how every teen uses the words. The examples are neutral illustrations, not collected teen messages.
Shook
General meaning: shocked or surprised. Gabb’s parent-facing glossary uses this concise gloss. Read Gabb’s teen slang guide.
Example: “I was shook when I heard the ending.” The speaker is saying the ending surprised them; the word alone does not tell you whether that reaction was good or bad.

Drip
General meaning: style or fashion. In a message about someone’s outfit or appearance, “drip” may refer to how stylish they look, rather than to literal liquid. Gabb’s guide associates the term with style and fashion. See Gabb’s glossary.
Example: “That jacket has drip.” This reads as a comment about style, though delivery and relationship still matter.

Cheugy
General meaning: outdated or trying too hard. Pearson’s educator guide gives those glosses and cautions that slang can land as praise, sarcasm or criticism depending on how it is used. Read Pearson’s guide for educators.
Example: “They called the trend cheugy.” That could be teasing or critical; the word does not establish the speaker’s intent by itself.

How to read an unfamiliar slang message
Use the message as a whole rather than treating a glossary as a secret decoder. The meaning may vary by community, and the same term can carry different force depending on tone.
- Literal context: What is the conversation about—an outfit, a surprise, a trend, or something else?
- Relationship: Is the speaker talking to a close friend, making a public comment, or addressing someone they do not know well?
- Tone: Does the surrounding exchange sound admiring, playful, sarcastic or disapproving?
- Community or platform: The term’s use may differ across online communities, and slang changes over time.
These are practical interpretation cues, not a formal test. If the message still is not clear, a low-key question such as “What do you mean by ‘cheugy’ here?” is more reliable than assuming the broad definition settles the matter.

Why a glossary cannot tell you how common a word is
Parent and educator guides can explain a term, but they are not surveys of teen speech. The guides cited here do not establish what share of teens use these words or how popular they are. Treat a definition as a clue about possible meaning, not evidence that a particular teen uses the word—or uses it in the same way.
This guide reflects source material available through October 8, 2026. Because slang evolves and varies by community, interpret a word in its current conversation rather than relying on a fixed definition.
