Ted Lasso season 3 is often overstuffed: its extended episodes juggle so many stories that the comedy and character development can lose focus. But for viewers invested in AFC Richmond, the season finale brings the story back to Ted’s decision to return to Kansas and delivers an emotionally satisfying goodbye. That is the balance in Andrew Webster’s May 31, 2023 review for The Verge: an uneven season that still finds a fitting close.
Why does season 3 feel overstuffed?
Webster’s central criticism is about structure rather than a lack of appealing characters or ideas. Across 12 episodes, the season gives substantial space to multiple concurrent stories, while longer runtimes make the whole feel less focused. In the review’s view, the show also shifts uneasily between sitcom and prestige-drama modes: plot developments can crowd out jokes, and some character changes feel underexplored or happen largely off-screen.
The review points to Nate’s exit from West Ham, Beard’s background, Keeley’s response to a leaked sex tape, and Richmond’s winning run as examples of threads that compete for attention. These are Webster’s assessments of how the season handles its storylines, not a claim that every viewer will find the same moments unsatisfying.
What still works amid the sprawl?
The season’s generous attention to its ensemble is part of the problem—and part of its appeal. Webster singles out smaller, character-focused diversions: the Amsterdam trip, a training session built around string, and Dani’s response to an international match. Such moments preserve the show’s comic and tender spirit, even as their accumulation contributes to the sense that the season is trying to do too much.

That tension explains why “unwieldy” does not mean joyless. The ensemble remains engaging, and individual scenes can land even when the larger season’s pacing feels uneven. Whether those detours feel like welcome warmth or distractions will depend in part on how much time a viewer wants the show to spend away from Richmond’s central story.
Does the season finale stick the landing?
For Webster, it does. “So Long, Farewell” narrows the focus to Ted’s planned return to Kansas, AFC Richmond’s final match against West Ham, and the relationships built over three seasons. Apple’s episode listing confirms that Richmond play their final match of the season; the judgment that the episode successfully closes the story is Webster’s.

The review acknowledges that the ending is sentimental and predictable, but finds it emotionally effective. Its examples of closure include Nate’s return, Rebecca’s continued stewardship of Richmond, Roy beginning therapy, Keeley proposing a women’s team, and Ted saying goodbye. The finale does not erase the season’s structural unevenness; instead, it gives the accumulated relationships a more concentrated send-off.

Who is season 3 for?
If you want a tightly paced season with every subplot receiving the same careful development, Webster’s critique is a useful warning: season 3 can feel crowded and inconsistent. If you are attached to Ted, the Richmond community, and the show’s mixture of comedy and sentiment, the finale offers a reason to stay with it. Its emotional closure works best for viewers who already care about these characters; it is not a fix for the season’s pacing issues.
