It began with a TikTok creator’s interpretation of fan-shot footage, and the creator warned that lip-reading is unreliable and the statements were alleged. The available reports also do not demonstrate that fans were divided over the claim.
What the viral lip-reading claim says
Music Times reported on April 16, 2024, that TikTok lip-reader Jackie Gonzalez interpreted a fan-captured clip as Swift saying, “That was the best thing that’s happened tonight. Sorry, I’m drunk.” Pedestrian repeated the claim the following day. Neither article presents a verified transcript or a direct statement from Swift.
Gonzalez’s TikTok included this warning, reproduced by Music Times: “Disclaimer: Lip reading is not a reliable form of communication, all statements are alleged.” The alleged wording should therefore be understood as Gonzalez’s interpretation, not as confirmed speech by Swift.
What the reports establish—and what they do not
Reported event context
Swift and Travis Kelce were reported at Coachella on Saturday, April 13, 2024. Parade separately described a viral clip of Kelce lifting Swift during Dom Dolla’s set. That footage provides context for their appearance at the festival; it does not verify the drinking allegation.
#1 Best Overall
No verified evidence of intoxication or drinking amount
The reviewed coverage does not establish whether Swift was intoxicated, how much she drank, or whether she drank at all. The phrase “drinking too much” goes beyond what the alleged lip-reading can prove. No independently published statistic on drinks consumed is reported in these articles.
Views and fan reaction are not proof
Music Times said Gonzalez’s clip had more than 330,000 TikTok views when its article was published. That is a reported view count at that time, not a measure of whether viewers believed the interpretation. Pedestrian cited positive comments from some TikTok users about Swift appearing excited to be near the front. Parade quoted enthusiastic reactions to the separate clip of Kelce lifting Swift. Those examples do not show a representative split of opinion about the drinking claim, so the description “divided fans” is not established by the reported evidence.
