There is no confirmed evidence that Taylor Swift’s “Actually Romantic” is about Charli XCX. The theory links perceived lyrical clues in Swift’s song to Charli’s “Sympathy is a knife,” but the artists’ reported explanations do not establish that connection—or confirm a feud.
What is “Actually Romantic”?
“Actually Romantic” is track seven on Taylor Swift’s 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl. The Associated Press reported the album’s release on October 3, 2025. Read the AP report.
Why do listeners connect it to Charli XCX?
The fan theory reads “Actually Romantic” as a response to Charli XCX’s “Sympathy is a knife,” from her album BRAT. TIME and The Washington Post describe listeners drawing links from Swift’s lyrics about an unnamed person’s song, Swift’s ex, and that person’s partner to Charli and their shared public context. Those are interpretations of the lyrics, not confirmed identifications or established facts about the artists’ private lives. TIME’s account and The Washington Post’s report both treat the attribution as unconfirmed.
What did Taylor Swift say the song means?
In a recorded introduction reported by The Washington Post on October 3, 2025, Swift described the premise as discovering that someone had a one-sided adversarial relationship with her, and realizing she had been on that person’s mind. The FADER reported that Swift also characterized the attention as flattering. Neither account names Charli as the person who inspired the song. The Washington Post; The FADER.

Did Charli XCX say “Sympathy is a knife” was about Taylor Swift?
No. Charli described the song as being about her own emotions, anxiety, and the stories her mind builds when she feels insecure. TIME, quoting Charli’s interview with New York Magazine, reported her explanation: “That song is about me and my feelings and my anxiety and the way my brain creates narratives and stories in my head when I feel insecure.” She has also described BRAT as exploring pressures and complicated feelings around being a female artist, including insecurity and competition—not as a collection of diss tracks. TIME’s report.
Is there a real feud between Taylor Swift and Charli XCX?
The public history helps explain why audiences read the songs in relation to each other, but it does not prove a feud. Charli opened for Swift on the Reputation Stadium Tour. A 2019 remark about performing for large audiences was taken by some as a slight; Charli later said the comments had been stripped of context and that she was grateful for the opportunity. Swift later praised Charli’s songwriting during the BRAT period. The Washington Post reported Swift’s 2024 praise: “I’ve been blown away by Charli’s melodic sensibilities since I first heard ‘Stay Away’ in 2011. Her writing is surreal and inventive, always. She just takes a song to places you wouldn’t expect it to go, and she’s been doing it consistently for over a decade. I love to see hard work like that pay off.” The Washington Post’s account.

How to separate the statements from the theory
- What Swift said: the song is about discovering an unexpected, one-sided adversarial dynamic; she did not identify the person.
- What Charli said: “Sympathy is a knife” concerns her own feelings, anxiety, and insecurity.
- What fans infer: lyrical parallels and public context may point to Charli, but that reading remains speculation.
So “Actually Romantic” may invite listeners to connect it with “Sympathy is a knife,” but the available reporting does not confirm that it is a response to Charli or that the two artists are feuding.
