Spoilers for Superman & Lois season 4, episode 9, “To Live and Die Again.” The penultimate episode brings Clark back into a fight with Doomsday, the lethal threat that shaped the season’s opening, and ends before the danger is resolved. Its closing image is an intentional echo of their earlier showdown—and a handoff to the series finale.

What happens in “To Live and Die Again”?

“To Live and Die Again” is season 4, episode 9, and the penultimate episode of Superman & Lois. Written and directed by Jai Jamison, it originally aired November 25, 2024. The episode’s threads bring the Kents toward the same imminent battle: Lois deals with the fallout of the debate, Clark turns Lex Luthor’s tactics against him, and Jonathan and Jordan prepare to fight.

Those storylines converge in downtown Smallville, where Superman faces a supercharged Doomsday as chaos unfolds. Clark pauses to reassure his family and mouths “I love you” to Lois. He begins, “I always wi…” before Doomsday strikes again, cutting off the declaration and the episode.

Why does the episode end on a cliffhanger?

The cut-off words make the fight more than a question of whether Superman can defeat Doomsday: Clark’s family is present, and the memory of an earlier loss hangs over them. In the previous season’s first showdown, Doomsday killed Clark. The new confrontation therefore brings the family back to a danger they know can be fatal.

Jamison told TVLine that he wanted the ending to be “an emotional hit” and to end “on an unresolved note.” He also described the characters as being “at their wits’ end” and at a breaking point, with the threat demanding that everyone come together. The ending is designed to leave both the battle and its emotional consequences open for the finale.

How does the episode come full circle?

The connection is an intentional echo, not a simple replay. The season began by establishing Doomsday as a lethal threat to Clark; episode 9 returns Superman to a fight with the creature and again leaves his fate uncertain. Jamison explicitly described the cliffhanger as a nod to their earlier showdown, making the family’s memory of Clark’s death part of the stakes.

The episode also brings the separate strands—Lois’s public and family pressures, Clark’s struggle with Luthor, and the brothers’ preparation—to the brink of a shared conflict. But it does not settle the season’s central danger. The final confrontation and its consequences belong to the series finale.

What follows in the series finale?

The CW’s official finale listing sets up the Kents fighting together as Luthor makes his final move on Smallville. In a December 2, 2024 interview, executive producers Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher discussed the finale’s resolution of the Luthor and Doomsday conflict, as well as its later-life story for Clark and Lois. They described the series as telling the “real” Death of Superman story. That context makes episode 9’s unresolved ending a bridge into the finale, rather than a conclusion in itself.
