Superman is a DC superhero who first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938. His story centers on an extraordinarily powerful being with roots on Krypton who grows up with the Kent family and lives publicly as Clark Kent. Across comics and screen adaptations, the details change; the lasting thread is his choice to use his abilities to help others.
Who is Superman?
Superman is the heroic identity of Clark Kent, a character whose origin connects the lost planet Krypton to his upbringing with the Kent family. His familiar public life as a reporter and his identity as a hero let stories explore both extraordinary power and ordinary human relationships. Lois Lane, Clark’s colleague and a major figure in Superman’s history, has been central to that balance.
There is no single version of every detail. DC’s account of the character’s origin traces changes across comic eras and films, so a specific fact about his family, childhood, or powers should be understood in the context of the version telling it. DC’s history of Superman’s evolving origin describes several of those shifts.
What are Superman’s powers?
Superman’s abilities vary by continuity and era, so no one list applies to every comic or adaptation. The yellow-sun explanation familiar to many readers first appeared in Action Comics #262 in 1960. DC says it became the lasting explanation in subsequent versions: Superman’s Kryptonian physiology responds to Earth’s yellow sun. The precise scope of his abilities has changed over time. DC’s origin history places that explanation in its comic-book context.

How did Superman’s story develop?
Superman’s history is not a straight line of unchanging canon. Comics and films have retold his origin and added details that later versions adopted. These landmarks show how the character’s mythology developed:
- 1938: Superman debuts in Action Comics #1, which also introduces Lois Lane and much of the early origin framework.
- 1945: More Fun Comics #101 explores Clark’s boyhood as Superboy and marks the first comic appearances of Jor-El and Lara, according to DC.
- 1960: Action Comics #262 introduces the yellow-sun explanation for Superman’s powers.
- 1978: Superman: The Movie presents the S shield as the House of El crest and places Smallville in Kansas. DC says comics and later adaptations adopted these ideas.
- 1986: John Byrne’s six-issue The Man of Steel retells Superman’s origin after Crisis on Infinite Earths, shaping later comics and screen versions.
- 1992: The “Death of Superman” storyline culminates in Superman #75. DC reports that the issue sold over six million copies and attracted broad news attention; that figure refers to this historical issue, not today’s comics market.
- 1996: Clark and Lois marry in Superman: The Wedding Album #1.
These milestones are drawn from DC’s account of twelve defining moments and its history of the origin. They show how a comic-book character’s mythology can evolve: a film can popularize an idea that comics later incorporate, while later writers can recast the origin for a new era.

Where should you start reading Superman comics?
Choose according to whether you want a foundational retelling, a major standalone story, or a contemporary series. These are different entry points rather than competing answers; the right one depends on how much continuity you want to follow.
| Reading goal | Starting point | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A major origin retelling | The Man of Steel (1986), by John Byrne | A six-issue post-Crisis on Infinite Earths retelling that influenced later versions. |
| A landmark story | “Death of Superman,” beginning with its lead-in issues and culminating in Superman #75 (1992) | A major event in Superman’s publication history; it is not simply an origin story. |
| A contemporary line | Look at the titles DC discussed in May 2025: Superman, Absolute Superman, and the launch of Superman Unlimited. | DC’s May 2025 overview is a dated snapshot, not confirmation of the October 2026 issue schedule or availability. Check a current publisher listing before choosing a specific issue. |
Before buying or borrowing, check whether you are looking at a collected edition or individual issues, and whether the story is designed to stand alone or continues a longer run. DC’s May 2025 overview of ongoing Superman comics can help place titles in their publication history, but it should not be treated as a current release calendar.

How does Superman differ across film and comics?
Adaptations do not simply reproduce one fixed version of the character. The 1978 film contributed lasting elements to the familiar mythology, including the House of El meaning of the shield and Smallville’s location in Kansas. The official site for James Gunn’s 2025 film presents its Superman as driven by compassion and belief in human goodness. That is the film’s positioning, not a definition that applies to every adaptation. The official Superman film site describes that version.
Superman’s moral meaning has also invited broader interpretations. In a 2025 Associated Press report, Gunn described Superman as someone people could believe in because of his character and determination to do right, rather than physical power alone. The quotation was attributed to Gunn’s April 18, 2024 Instagram post; it reflects his stated perspective, not a universal account of what the character means to every reader. The Associated Press report discusses religious and moral themes surrounding the character.
