Where Kalgoorlie placed
Preply’s ranking gave Kalgoorlie a score of 3.36 out of 5, above the study’s reported national average of 2.58. The figures were reported by PerthNow in February 2024. That means the headline’s “tops list of 10” refers to Kalgoorlie’s place among the ten highest-ranked cities, not a first-place finish. PerthNow’s report and Preply’s study page identify Orange as the winner.
How Kalgoorlie compared with other cities
The ranking also placed two other Western Australian cities in the top ten: Albany came second and Busselton seventh. Preply identified Albany as the leading city for romantic hotels and Busselton as the leader for activities described as good for couples. PerthNow reported Geelong, Newcastle-Maitland and Bunbury as the three lowest-ranked cities among the 50 included.

What Preply counted as romance
Preply says it combined seven factors into an overall normalized score out of five. Four measured online search interest related to dating, proposals, flowers and Valentine’s Day. The other three counted restaurants and hotels described as romantic, plus activities described as good for couples.
For the search measures, Preply used Google Keyword Planner data from January through December 2023. It started with seed terms, expanded them to a 120-keyword list and segmented search volume by city; it says data was collected in January 2024. TripAdvisor provided romantic restaurant counts per 10,000 people and couples’ activity listings, while Booking.com provided romantic hotel counts per 10,000 people. Preply says population figures came from CityPopulation.de and Wikipedia. These are the study’s stated sources and method; the published pages do not establish an independent validation of the platform data or listings.
What Kalgoorlie’s proposal-related result means
PerthNow reported that Kalgoorlie ranked fourth for a proposal-related measure, with 6,767 people per 100,000 interested in engagement rings. This is a reported rate associated with engagement-ring interest—not a count of actual proposals and not evidence that the same number of people proposed.

The result describes a combination of online attention and platform listings, rather than a survey of residents, a measure of relationship satisfaction or an audit of what visitors experience. A high score therefore does not prove that one city is inherently more romantic than another, and the ranking is not a current travel recommendation. Its search data covers 2023, with collection in January 2024, and the pages do not provide a full underlying city-by-city dataset or an independent replication.
