Its anchor is a tense interview between Lois Lane and Clark Kent: she presses him on his actions, while he insists that people needed saving. Around them, the footage places the Kents’ family life, the Daily Planet, Lex Luthor and other heroes in a world that is already in motion.
What the trailer reveals
DC’s May 14, 2025 breakdown describes the three-minute trailer as built around Lois Lane interviewing Superman. The exchange sets up a conflict between Lois’s journalistic scrutiny and Clark’s urgency to help people. When he explains his decision, he says, “People were going to die.” The scene establishes a personal and professional tension; it does not, by itself, explain the full circumstances behind the interview. DC’s trailer breakdown identifies the interview as a way to reveal the characters’ relationship and motivations.
A world with other heroes
The footage shows the Engineer, Angela Spica, transforming her hands into buzzsaws and fighting Superman. Mister Terrific appears on the ground, while other shots feature his T-Spheres, Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern ring and Hawkgirl in action. These images make clear that Superman is not the only extraordinary figure in this setting. They do not establish every character’s role or the future direction of the wider franchise.
Places and people around Clark
Clark and Jimmy Olsen appear together at the Daily Planet. The trailer also visits the Fortress of Solitude, where Krypto defends it as Lex Luthor and the Engineer invade, and shows Clark with Jonathan and Martha Kent. Jonathan’s advice—“Your choices, your actions, that’s what makes you who you are”—connects the superhero’s public choices to the values he learned at home.

Superman as a public figure
Lex is shown watching Superman become a focus of public attention. In a line reproduced by DC, he says: “He’s not a man, he’s an ‘it’ that’s somehow become the focal point of the entire world’s conversation. I will not accept that.” The line frames Lex’s hostility in terms of Superman’s influence as well as his abilities.
Small background details help make the setting feel lived in: a Superman toy on a Daily Planet bulletin board, a postcard resembling the cover of Jim Lee’s Superman #204, and references to LordTech, Big Belly Burger, the Smallville Giants and the fictional Mighty Crab Boys. These are details in the trailer, not evidence that every named reference will have a major role in the story.

Why it was presented as a DCU beginning
DC Studios announced the film on January 31, 2023, under its then-title Superman: Legacy, naming it the first film in Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters.” The studio’s initial slate comprised 10 projects—five films and five television series—and was described as an effort to tell cohesive stories across platforms. That is the announced 2023 slate, not a count of the DCU’s eventual or current projects. DC Studios’ slate announcement includes the original framing.
James Gunn, then DC Studios co-chairman and CEO, called Superman: Legacy “the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe.” In a separate interview published the same day, he said, “We’re coming into a world where superheroes exist and have existed for some time in one form or another, and that’s the universe.” Those statements explain the intended starting point: viewers would meet Clark in a world with an existing superhero presence, rather than watch a conventional account of his origin. DC’s January 2023 interview with Gunn and Peter Safran also records Safran’s description of the continuity: “The DCU’s a multiverse, but we’re going to be focusing on one universe from that multiverse.”

Shared DCU and DC Elseworlds
In that 2023 explanation, DC described the DCU as a shared continuity spanning animation, television, movies and games, while projects outside it would be marked as DC Elseworlds. The distinction is whether a project belongs to the connected universe, not simply which medium it uses. These were explanations of the plan at the time; they should not be read as a complete account of DC’s evolving plans as of 2026.
