For a first watch, finish Steins;Gate episodes 1–24, then watch episode 23β, followed by all 23 episodes of Steins;Gate 0. Keep the original episodes 23 and 24 together: 23β is an alternate episode 23 that sets up the branch explored in Zero, not a replacement for the original episode.
Recommended first-watch order
- Steins;Gate (2011), episodes 1–24. Watch the normal episodes 23 and 24 as the original series finale.
- Episode 23β — “Open the Missing Link: Divide by Zero” (2015). This alternate episode introduces the path that leads into Steins;Gate 0.
- Steins;Gate 0 (2018), episodes 1–23. This is the main series for the alternate branch.
This order preserves the original show’s complete ending before opening the alternate route. The official STEINS;GATE 0 site describes Zero as a legitimate sequel; its story takes place in a beta world line after Okabe gives up on saving the woman he failed to save. Episode 23β supplies the branch context.
What to do with the optional extras
The extras add material, but you do not need them to move from the original series to Zero.
- “Egoistic Poriomania,” the original-series OVA (often numbered episode 25, 2012): Optional; watch after original episode 24.
- Steins;Gate: The Movie — Load Region of Déjà Vu (2013): Optional follow-up to the original anime; place it after the OVA if watching both.
- Steins;Gate 0 OVA (2018): Optional side story; watch after Zero‘s episode 23.
For the central story, watch the original episodes 1–24, episode 23β, and Steins;Gate 0 episodes 1–23. Episode numbering can differ between catalogs, so use the episode title when available.

Why some lists put 23β in the middle
A published alternative is to watch the original episodes 1–22, then 23β, then all of Steins;Gate 0, and finally the original episodes 23–24. This foregrounds the branch chronology, but it postpones the original finale until after another 23-episode series. It is a valid preference for a chronology-led rewatch, not a required first-watch sequence.
The apparent contradiction comes from treating two different episode 23s as though one simply replaces the other. The regular episode 23 and episode 23β serve different routes: the regular episode belongs to the original episodes 1–24, while 23β opens the alternate route developed in Zero.

How the series is numbered
The original television series has 24 episodes. The official movie-project site announced the series as “TV版全24話” (all 24 TV episodes), and its 2015 Complete Blu-ray Box announcement also identifies all 24 TV episodes as part of the collection. That count refers to the normal original run; episode 23β is a separate alternate episode, and Steins;Gate 0 has its own 23-episode run.
