The NFL said he would be banned for life from NFL stadiums and events. He was later arrested on two misdemeanor charges; in May 2026, a judge found him guilty of resisting an officer and not guilty of disturbing the peace.
What happened during the halftime show?
On February 9, 2025, during Super Bowl LIX at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Nantambu displayed a flag and ran across the field while Kendrick Lamar performed. Security and law enforcement apprehended him, but the show continued without interruption.
Louisiana State Police described the flag as a Sudanese flag bearing the message “Sudan and Free Gaza.” The Associated Press’s first-day account instead described a combination Sudanese-Palestinian flag with “Sudan” and “Gaza” written on it. Those are the respective descriptions reported by the sources.
Was the protest part of Kendrick Lamar’s show?
The NFL said Nantambu was one of the 400-member field cast, had hidden the flag, and revealed it late in the performance. The league said the production did not know his intent. Roc Nation, which produced the show, said the protest “was neither planned nor part of the production and was never in any rehearsal.”

Was the halftime performer arrested?
There were two distinct stages in the police response. On February 10, 2025, New Orleans police said Nantambu would not face charges at that point. On June 26, Louisiana State Police announced that he had surrendered and was booked on charges of resisting an officer and disturbing the peace by interruption of a lawful assembly. State police said he had permission to be on the field as a hired extra, but not to demonstrate as he did.
What was the verdict?
On May 11, 2026, a judge found Nantambu guilty of misdemeanor resisting an officer and not guilty of disturbing the peace. The Associated Press reported that sentencing was scheduled for June 1, 2026, and that the statute carried a possible fine of up to $500 and up to six months in prison. That figure is a reported maximum penalty, not his sentence; the sentencing outcome is not established by the available reporting.
