Is Stephen Colbert writing a new Lord of the Rings movie?
Yes. Warner Bros. announced on March 25, 2026, that Colbert would co-write the film with Peter McGee and Philippa Boyens. Producer Peter Jackson introduced Colbert’s involvement in a social media video, according to the Associated Press.
Colbert described the project as an effort to make a story faithful to both J.R.R. Tolkien’s books and Jackson’s existing films. He told Jackson: “You know what the books mean to me, and what your films mean to me.”
What is the new film called?
The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past is the reported working title, not a confirmed final title. ABC News reported on March 26 that a director had not been announced at that time. The available announcement reporting does not establish that a director has since been attached.

What is the story about?
The reported story follows Sam, Merry and Pippin fourteen years after Frodo’s passing. Sam’s daughter Elanor pursues a long-buried secret about how the War of the Ring nearly unfolded differently.
Colbert said the story draws on six early chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring that were not developed for Jackson’s first film. He explained to Jackson: “But the thing I found myself reading over and over again were the six chapters early on in (‘The Fellowship of the Ring’) that y’all never developed into the first movie back in the day.”
That source novel is J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The reported premise signals an adaptation that reaches back to material left out of the first film; the announcement does not establish further plot details.
How is it different from The Hunt for Gollum?
Shadow of the Past is separate from The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Warner Bros. Discovery and New Line Cinema have reported two Middle-earth films in development. The Hunt for Gollum is the other, earlier announced project; the films should not be conflated, and the reporting does not give them a shared release schedule or premise.

How does the film announcement relate to Colbert’s Late Show exit?
CBS said The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end after the 2025–26 broadcast season. The Associated Press and ABC News reported May 21, 2026, as the date of its final episode. The movie announcement came on March 25, while the show’s final season was still underway; it did not come after Colbert left the show. The reports establish the timing, not that the show’s ending caused the film opportunity.
