E! News reported that Ira also criticized therapists who try to dissuade someone from transitioning.
What did Stephen Ira tweet about Leelah Alcorn?
E! News reported that Ira recalled Alcorn had recently encouraged another transgender girl on Tumblr, writing that “one of the last things leelah alcorn did in her life was tell another trans girl on tumblr that she was beautiful.” The Tumblr detail is presented here as E! News reported it; the original post has not been independently verified.
In other reported tweets, Ira challenged the notion that a parent loses a child when that child comes out as transgender. He urged parents to accept and support their trans children, rather than treating their identity as a loss.
Ira also wrote, according to E! News: “if your therapist tries hard to convince you not to transition, that’s conversion therapy! they don’t have to ‘be’ a conversion therapist,” and called for people to “give this young woman the peace in death that she deserves and work for what she wanted, work for the things she needed while she lived.” Those are statements attributed to Ira by the contemporaneous report, not a formal finding about a specific practitioner in Alcorn’s case.

ABC News described Stephen Ira Beatty in November 2013 as the oldest child of Warren Beatty and Annette Bening and reported on his public advocacy for transgender health care. That background helps explain why his comments were covered, but the focus of the 2015 report was his response to Alcorn’s death, not his parents.
