In Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire, a portrait begins with one woman secretly watching another—and becomes a story about what changes when looking is returned. Set in 1770, the film follows painter Marianne as she studies Héloïse, her reluctant subject, for a wedding portrait Héloïse does not know is being made. Their exchange of glances gradually turns observation into intimacy, artistic collaboration and romance.

What is Portrait of a Lady on Fire about?

This 2019 French film was written and directed by Céline Sciamma, with Noémie Merlant as Marianne and Adèle Haenel as Héloïse. On a remote island, Marianne is commissioned to paint Héloïse’s wedding portrait. Héloïse has recently left a convent and resists the marriage awaiting her, so Marianne is instructed to observe her without revealing the purpose of her attention. The Festival de Cannes synopsis puts the arrangement plainly: “She observes her by day, to paint her secretly.”

The setup makes the act of looking more than a practical detail. Marianne must learn Héloïse’s expressions and gestures in order to paint her, while Héloïse initially has no reason to know she is being studied. As the two women spend time together, that one-sided observation changes. Their relationship becomes central to both the story and the making of the portrait.

Why do the eyes matter?

At first, Marianne’s gaze serves the commission: she is gathering information for a likeness without Héloïse’s consent or knowledge. But close attention also means noticing how Héloïse moves, reacts and expresses herself. When the women begin to look at one another openly, the film shifts from hidden surveillance toward reciprocal attention.

  • PHYSICAL FILM
  • The Criterion Collection

The Criterion Collection describes the film as an “exchange of sustained gazes” through which Marianne and Héloïse learn one another’s gestures and expressions, developing a creative collaboration as well as a romance. That progression gives the portrait a changing meaning: it starts as an object Marianne is asked to produce about Héloïse, then becomes part of a relationship shaped by what each woman sees and shares.

A story shaped by the female gaze

Women’s looking and artistic work are not side details here; they drive the plot and shape how it is told. Criterion reports Sciamma describing the film as “a manifesto about the female gaze.” In this context, that phrase points to the film’s attention to women as both observers and subjects—not simply to a painter looking at a sitter, but to the ways the women come to see and know one another.

Why is the film award-winning?

The film received major recognition for its writing and visual craft. The Festival de Cannes lists Sciamma’s 2019 Best Screenplay award, while Pyramide Films lists the Queer Palm alongside the film’s Cannes selection and screenplay prize. Claire Mathon received the 2020 César for Best Cinematography, according to Unifrance.

Those awards reflect different parts of the film’s achievement: its screenplay builds a relationship around observation and artistic collaboration, while its cinematography received recognition from France’s César awards. The premise makes looking central; the film’s reception also recognized its writing and image-making.
