Left-Handed Girl is a vivid, intimate family drama set amid the bustle of a Taipei night market. Shih-Ching Tsou’s first solo-directed feature uses a child’s conflict with family tradition to open onto a larger story about three generations of women, individuality, and the secrets families keep. It’s a heart-melting journey in the sense that it makes room for humor and tenderness alongside painful truths—and it is best approached without spoilers.
What is Left-Handed Girl about?
Single mother Shu-Fen returns to Taipei with her daughters, I-Ann and young I-Jing, and opens a stall in a night market. When the girls’ traditional grandfather objects to I-Jing using her left hand, a seemingly small family dispute becomes a doorway into deeper expectations and long-held secrets. Netflix’s film announcement describes the premise and the family at its center.

The left-hand conflict gives the story its spark, but this is not simply a film about handedness. Its focus is the family: how women in different generations navigate tradition, financial pressure, affection, and independence. Tsou has described the film as an exploration of the push and pull between tradition and individuality, with the hope that people can reflect on where they come from while carving their own paths. Le Pacte’s English press notes include her comments on the film.
Why the Taipei setting matters
The night market is more than a colorful backdrop. Tsou says the crew filmed in real spaces and wanted the locations to feel like living parts of the story. Stalls, crowds, and the rhythms of the market place the family’s private tensions inside a busy shared world. That gives the film an observational texture distinct from a domestic drama confined to the home. Netflix Tudum discusses the setting and Tsou’s approach in its interview with the filmmaker.

A family drama with more than one tone
Tsou has described Left-Handed Girl as both a family drama and a coming-of-age portrait, with comedy and emotion in the mix. That tonal range suits a story about people who can be loving, frustrating, absurd, and hurtful to one another, sometimes in quick succession. As Tsou put it: “Real families don’t exist in just one tone. Life is messy, emotional, absurd, and tender, often all at once.” The quote appears in Netflix Tudum’s interview.
The film’s perspective also shifts across the family rather than treating one character as the sole measure of what is happening. That makes it less like a single-issue coming-of-age story and more like an ensemble portrait: a child’s experience can bring a family’s contradictions into view without reducing the adults around her to simple villains or heroes.

Is Left-Handed Girl based on a true story?
No. It is a fictional film, not a literal retelling of Tsou’s life. The director has said it draws on her upbringing in Taiwan as well as stories shared by family and friends. She and Sean Baker developed the project over many years; Netflix’s announcement says they began shaping the screenplay two decades earlier. The personal roots inform the setting and emotional perspective, but the characters and events should not be presented as documentary fact. See the Netflix rights announcement and Le Pacte press notes.
Who made the film, and who is in it?
Tsou directed and co-wrote the film with Sean Baker, who also produced and edited it. Their long-running collaboration and Tsou’s memories of Taipei helped shape the project. The principal cast includes Janel Tsai as Shu-Fen, Shih-Yuan Ma as I-Ann, Nina Ye as I-Jing, and Teng-Hui Huang as Johnny. Netflix identifies Ma’s performance as her acting debut; its cast feature also looks at the characters’ relationships.

Because rights and catalogs differ by territory and can change, check your local Netflix listing rather than assuming it is available everywhere. The territorial exceptions are in Netflix’s acquisition announcement.

Is it better to watch spoiler-free?
Yes, if you want the story’s discoveries to land as intended. Tsou has identified a final reveal as a feature that changes how viewers may understand earlier events. There is no need to know more before watching: the family dynamics, the night-market setting, and the left-hand dispute are enough to enter the film without giving away its later turn.
