Alappuzha Gymkhana is built around amateur boxing, but its young protagonists do not begin as driven athletes pursuing a lifelong sporting dream. For them, the ring is also a way to earn grace marks, get into college and find some direction. That tension makes this Malayalam film a sports drama without making boxing its only subject.
What is Alappuzha Gymkhana about?
Directed by Khalid Rahman, the Malayalam feature follows nineteen-year-old Jojo and his friends as they enter a state amateur boxing championship. The Central Board of Film Certification’s synopsis describes Jojo amid an identity crisis and love triangles; the production studio says the group turns to boxing to secure grace marks and pursue higher education. The CBFC record and Reelistic Studios’ film page establish the premise.
That starting point matters: boxing is not presented simply as the fulfilment of an established athletic ambition. It is a practical opening the characters see, and a challenge that may give their group focus.
Is it really a boxing movie?
Yes, in its plot and action. The team trains and competes, and the championship provides the film with a sporting progression. Onmanorama’s review describes a second half built around a series of boxing matches, while The Indian Express places Jojo’s team at the Kerala State Amateur Boxing Championship.

But boxing is also a means to other ends: educational opportunity, belonging and the search for direction. The gap between the conventional sports-film image of an athlete with a singular dream and these characters’ more uncertain motives gives the story a different emphasis. India Today and The Indian Express both frame the film as a sports drama whose concerns extend beyond competition. That is an interpretation of its premise and critical framing, not a guarantee that every viewer will find the balance equally persuasive.
What does the coach add to the story?
Lukman Avaran plays Antony Joshua, a suspended former national-level boxer who coaches the group, according to Cinema Express. His character brings a second perspective on the sport: boxing is not merely a convenient route for the boys, but also a world with its own experience and discipline.

In that interview, published 7 May 2025, Avaran described his preparation this way: “We had to look, walk and fight like real boxers.” That is the actor’s account of preparing for the performance, not independent evidence that the film’s boxing technique has been validated.
When and how long is the film?
Alappuzha Gymkhana received a UA 7+ certificate on 7 April 2025, according to its CBFC record. BookMyShow’s listing gives the theatrical release date as 10 April 2025 and lists a runtime of 2 hours 20 minutes. The CBFC record reports a certified length of 140.52 metres rather than a runtime, so the BookMyShow duration is the listing’s figure, not a universal timing established by the certification record.
