The Acolyte episode 4, “Day,” returns to the present-day pursuit after the previous episode revisited the sisters’ past. Sol’s Jedi team and Mae and Qimir race through Khofar’s dangerous forest to reach Kelnacca; a masked stranger’s arrival supplies the closing hook. The episode builds tension through divided loyalties and an ominous setting, but its final reveal lands before the chase has developed into a fully satisfying turning point.

Spoiler note: The opening overview is spoiler-light. The section marked “Spoilers” discusses the episode’s ending.

What happens in The Acolyte episode 4?

“Day” is season 1, episode 4 of The Acolyte, released June 18, 2024. Sol persuades Vernestra Rwoh to let him take Osha on a mission to prevent another murder. Meanwhile, Sol’s group and Mae and Qimir make their way through Khofar’s forest, each racing to find Kelnacca. The episode’s official synopsis describes traps and dangerous wildlife in the forest, then ends with a cloaked stranger carrying a red lightsaber. StarWars.com’s episode guide lists it as TV-14.

The series takes place in the final years of the High Republic, roughly 100 years before The Phantom Menace, according to Lucasfilm. That context gives the Jedi investigation its place in the wider timeline, but “Day” is chiefly concerned with this immediate race through the forest and the personal conflicts within it.

Review: a tense pursuit with a short runway

The shift back to the present restores momentum

After episode 3’s focus on the sisters’ past, “Day” moves back to the pursuit and gives the story a clear destination: Kelnacca. The competing journeys create a useful forward pull. The Jedi are trying to prevent another murder, while Mae and Qimir are also closing in on the Wookiee Jedi. Khofar’s forest makes that race feel more uncertain than a straightforward trek from one point to another.

Still, the episode’s structure is more about setting up the next confrontation than delivering one. It creates expectation around who will reach Kelnacca and what that meeting might reveal, then closes as a new threat enters the scene. The return to the present helps the season’s momentum, but the installment offers limited resolution of its own before the cliffhanger takes over.

Character conflict gives the chase its emotional stakes

The pursuit is not only a matter of getting to Kelnacca first. Sol’s attachment to Osha and his guilt about Mae complicate his judgment, while Osha is caught between her history and the Jedi path she has chosen. Mae, too, is reconsidering her goals and abilities. These doubts give the characters reasons to hesitate, question one another, or press on for more than tactical advantage.

That emotional friction mostly deepens the chase rather than derailing it. The episode’s strongest tension comes from the gap between what the characters say they are doing and what their relationships suggest they feel. At the same time, the rapid movement through the forest leaves some of those conflicts feeling like unresolved setup; the episode raises them more readily than it can explore them.

Khofar turns the investigation into a survival test

The dense forest changes the atmosphere of the search. Traps, dangerous wildlife and Kelnacca’s isolation make the Jedi’s investigation feel exposed and difficult to control. The setting also gives the two groups a shared danger: neither can treat the journey as a simple pursuit through open ground. The landscape contributes to suspense without needing to explain every threat in advance.

The trade-off is that the forest functions more effectively as a source of danger and mood than as a fully developed setting. Its risks sharpen the sense of uncertainty, but the episode’s short build toward the closing encounter means the environment does not have much room to reshape the characters’ plans.

Spoilers: what the masked person’s arrival means for the ending

The episode ends with a cloaked, masked stranger carrying a red lightsaber. That reveal is a strong visual hook: it transforms the race to reach Kelnacca into an immediate confrontation with an unknown threat. The official episode guide likewise ends its synopsis on the stranger’s appearance, underscoring how deliberately the episode is built around that final beat.

As a cliffhanger, it works better as a promise than as a payoff. The arrival gives the episode a sharp final image and makes the danger feel immediate, but it arrives before the pursuit has produced a substantial encounter or answer. Viewers who enjoy suspenseful chapter endings may find the hook compelling; those looking for a more complete episode arc may find “Day” slight, as though it stops just as its central conflict is about to come into focus.

Verdict: an effective bridge, not a complete payoff

“Day” restores the present-day momentum, makes Khofar’s forest an uneasy setting for the hunt, and gives the pursuit emotional stakes through Sol, Osha and Mae’s divided loyalties. Its weakness is structural: the episode spends much of its time approaching a confrontation, then leaves the most consequential turn for the next chapter. The masked stranger is a memorable hook, but not enough on its own to make the installment feel fully resolved.
